Deserted Island Survival 101

As the students walked into the Danger Shop, they would find themselves on a beautiful beach, jungle behind them, sea in front of them, palm trees swaying in a gentle breeze. Directly in front of them stood their teacher, wearing a cotton sundress and holding a parasol. And off to the left, half in the water, half out, was the wreckage of a plane (or most of a plane). It was still on fire.

"Hi, guys!" Petra said cheerily. "Welcome to our island! I was originally going to have us meet on the real beach, but I realized that would involve moving too much stuff around, so here we are! I hope you like it, because you're going to be stuck here for seven weeks. I'm Petra, and over there is Kenzi, my TA. Wave, Kenzi. Your scenario is this: You were on a plane that crashed on this island." She pointed to the wreckage. "That plane. Everyone else is dead, and that sucks. There are no other people on this island. You do not know exactly where you are, or how far from another island you might be, and you do not know when rescue may be coming, or even if they know where to look. So you have to survive for an unknown period of time. Luckily, everyone who survived is uninjured--everyone except Kenzi, who has broken her arm." Sorry, Kenzi.

"Here are the ground rules. You can use anything that you find on the plane, from luggage to seat cushions to parts of the plane itself. Great news, there's bottled water on the plane, too, but only enough for maybe a day or two, especially in this heat. I have modeled the contents of the luggage on the scenario I found myself in, so they may not be what you expect." Meaning the passengers had packed for a beauty pageant, not a survivalist expedition. "You can also use anything you brought with you today, so take an inventory of your pockets and bags. Anything new you bring in with you later will be considered cheating." She wagged a finger at them. "Don't do it.

"So, what is survival going to involve? Fresh water, food, and shelter are the big three items. We also need to protect ourselves from the sun, not get eaten by any wildlife that might be in that jungle--" wait until they encountered the giant feathered snakes "--and yeah, those both fall under 'shelter' but they're true when you're away from your shelter, too. And we need to find a way to try to communicate with anyone who might be trying to rescue us. If you can think of any other things we should be focusing on, please let me know.

"So, introductions are traditional, and there's actually quite a few things I want to know about you guys. Names, obviously, and I want to know why you decided to take this class. Then I want to know what three things you would bring with you to a desert island if you got to pick, and then I want to know what you've got with you today. Even if you think it's not going to be useful. Any skills you have that you think might come in handy would be good to mention now, too. We'll start with you," she said, pointing to someone at random.

Once they were done, Petra said, "Our discussion for this week is going to be about priorities. I'm in charge here, yeah, because I've done this before, and ultimately I'll be deciding, but I want you guys to think about this. What do you think we should do next week? What's our most important goal? Should we start clearing the plane? Investigate the jungle? Try to splint Kenzi's arm? What do you think?"

"I'm Cade, I took this class because I've been left on my own more than once, and I've got--" he peered into his belt pouch, "water tabs for sanitation, my comm--phone but more advanced than yours--some tension wire, a few rations and a small vibroblade. I'm normally more armed but you know--" he shrugged. "School rules."

His first time starting from scratch he'd been in his pajamas without even shoes, surrounded by pirates eager to kill him. This was better.

"I would've brought my blaster," he said, "but other than that...I'm good with improvising."

"I usually carry it," Cade said. "Never know when things are going to go straight down the--"

Well, that was a Huttese word for toilet that Petra was probably not going to need.

"My name's Zhari," Zhahar replied, "and I'm not half so well-prepared as Cade. I'm taking this course to learn how to be more self-sufficient, especially since I'm not sure where I'm going to end up after I leave here."

Opening her handbag, she added, "I've got a bottle of water, a few granola bars, some tissues, uhh, some...sanitary items..." Great, now she was blushing as hard as Sholeh, "Midol, a few bandages and a dorm key."
