American History Through Film, Monday, Period 3

"Well, hello there!" Steve said enthusiastically to his students. "This is American History Through Film, I'm Steve Rogers, I'll be your teacher, and let's get started. Introductions are traditional, but we have a small group and I'm sure we'll all get to know each other, so I'm going to dispense with them and we'll begin with our first film, about an incident in the early settlement and exploration of America, Pocahontas. Like most of the movies we'll watch, it has some inaccuracies...well, Disney in particular takes some liberties, but the entertainment industry is what it is. Just so you know, Pocahontas was probably about twelve at the time she met these people, there's no indication she fell in love with John Smith, and there was almost certainly no talking willow tree. But it's a very enjoyable movie, and I hope you'll look into the real Pocahontas more.

"Now, as for logistics before I start the movie, since we meet right before lunch, and most movies are more than an hour long, if you want to bring your lunch with you and stay for the rest of the movie that might be a good idea. If you need to leave right at the end of the class period, that's completely fine, too. Even if you don't want to bring lunch please feel free to bring snacks and drinks--popcorn is particularly traditional. And finally, housekeeping note, Ulrik will be our TA for the session, so everybody say hi to him. Now let's watch the movie."

Bay had seen this movie before, but it was cute. She paid attention for almost the entire film.

Raven was faintly amused to see how Disney's style had changed in the last sixty years. There seemed to be a lot more emphasis on earnest musical numbers, for one.

Of course, the last Disney movie she'd seen was their version of Alice in Wonderland, which admittedly wasn't terribly earnest about most things.

Billy had already seen this movie a bunch of times, but he was perfectly happy to watch it again. The hardest part was resisting the urge to sing along.
