First-Aid and Basic Medicine | Tuesday | Period Two

Today the Danger Shop was set to resemble a rural, third-world village, complete with creaky but stable houses, more than a few people around (in actuality, probably many more people than would really be present in a small town like this), and a steady current of light rain with puddles rapidly forming in the dirt. Hope you were ready to get a little muddy, students!

In addition, each student was armed with a very limited first-aid kit, some of which had faulty hinges, just because.

"This is your final," Bruce said, swinging his arms. "It's wet and you'll be distracted, but as soon as I'm done talking, each one of you is going to be accosted by someone in this village who needs your help. And when you're done there, you'll be accosted again until time runs out. Use your supplies, don't offend anyone, and remember you're here to help."

Bruce had really enjoyed programming this, and the little details like the ambient dialogue of passersby (which was rarely in (broken) English, and far more frequently in rapid Bengali) and the growing size of the puddles on the ground were enough to make any good game designer weep.

"Ready? Go."

There was a moment of panic when Sholeh saw the little boy, tears rolling down his face that was slowly turning colors. She froze, paralyzed by fear and indecision.

*You studied this,* Zhahar murmured. *What's the first thing to do?*

::Ask if they need CPR,:: Sholeh said. ::Right? That's right, right?::

*Well, they don't speak the language much, but he's getting kind of purple and they're both frantic, so I think that's a given.*

::Okay, right. Well...if he's choking, the first thing we need to do is...clear his airway!::

*Good girl! You can do it!*

First, Sholeh performed the Heimlich maneuver on the boy, because it didn't matter how many times she breathed into him if his throat was blocked. By the time the item was dislodged, though, the boy had gone slack and unconscious in his arms.

::Zhahar! What next! What do I do!::

*Relax and take it easy, Sholeh!* Zhahar commanded. *You can't help him while panicking! Lay him down on his back.*

Step by step, Zhahar walked Sholeh through the steps of CPR. When the boy opened his eyes and breathed on his own, Sholeh couldn't help but give him a hug.

Billy had to admit, he was a lot calmer than he thought he'd be at seeing someone choke, and he was really thankful he remembered the steps for CPR.
