Combat Tech, Tuesday Morning (1st Period)

"This," Kaidan said, "Is an YMIR mech."

It was large, was what it was.

"It possesses twin mass accelerator canons and a rocket launcher. It possesses extremely sophisticated kinetic barriers and armor. In case it wasn't obvious, it was built with only one purpose in mind: to provide overpowering force against the enemy."

He banged his hand on the metal; the sound carried across the Danger Shop. "Similar mechs have been engineered to contain a pilot," he said. "All the firepower of a mech combined with the versatility and the flexibility of a human mind. Of course, they also get used elsewhere. Because a mech like this can provide a great deal of lift, it's excellent for work in construction and anything else that involves moving heavy objects."

He stepped away from it. "It can be used offensively or defensively," he added, "Especially if someone's inside-- well, it's going to take a lot of bullets to get in there. But that means different building priorities, obviously. Mechs are often slow, and they're slowed down more by the weight of the weapons and the armor. Using it to, say, evacuate somebody is ideally going to involve a lighter mech."

"That's the practical side," he added. "Then there's the moral one. This thing? It can do a lot of damage. And the damage it does is usually going to be lethal. So when is it okay to use one in an assault?"

He pointed the class towards a couple of desks that had just materialized. "I want you to think long and hard about where and how you'd want to deploy a mech if you had the chance," he said. "Then I want you to go and design one. It doesn't have to be specific if you haven't got the specifics in mind, but draw something. And motivate your choices."

. . . yeah, Anakin, who'd been doing a lot of droid-building of late, was just going to spend the entire lecture staring at the mech with intense interest.

Someone of Skywalker lineage being interested in mechanical things? SHOCKER.

"Oh my God I've read manga about this," Anya said, eyes glinting with glee.

Jim wasn't an artist but he figured he could draw something up that would look like a mech. Jim's design wasn't as big as the mech in front of him. He went for smaller but hopefully quicker with a few guns attached to the arms and some smaller ones hidden in compartments in the legs.

He added some armor to protect the mech but really just wanted the speed and gracefulness (yes, he wanted that in a mech) to be enough to keep it safe defensively.

Anakin didn't bother with the writing utensils; he just pulled out his datapad and started tapping away. Lando had been working on some combat droids recently, and it was entirely possible that Anakin was using some of the prototype designs as a basis. It was more or less impossible for him not to design this thing with the purpose of using it against the Yuuzhan Vong in mind, after all.

Anya was making a Gundam, and she wasn't even going to deny that fact.

Gundams were cool, yo. She was kind of good at drawing, but this was an entirely different thing.

Victor liked this kind of design work, and he was good at it. The figure he eventually drew was smaller than the mech Kaidan was showing them and lighter, with shield capacity that would allow it to get in and out undetected by human eyes. He thought it'd make a good rescue or stealth mission tool.

Jim decided his design was going to be offensive stealthiness. Would it work? He wasn't sure. He liked the mechanical workings of things but he'd never put anything together that wasn't a car.

Still, he wanted his mech to be able to be deployed in situations were regular soldiers wouldn't survive. Places with high radiation, extreme elements or anything in between. Deploy the mech, get some readings, kill bad guys if needed. That's what he wanted.
