Cultural Appreciation, Period Four

Instead of the typical classroom, today they were meeting in the Danger Shop, which was set up to resemble a Washitsu, containing several low tables upon which were all different sorts of sushi.

"Today," Thor said, as he greeted the class. "We are going to discuss sushi. Sushi originated in Japan, but has since become popular all across Midgard. It is made with rice, seaweed, and many different types of fillings, typically raw seafood but also vegetables and some other meats as well. As the consumption of sushi spread to other nations, many regional variations have been created."

"So, go ahead and try some for yourself," he said, gesturing to the tables.

Along the back of the room there was a counter set up with ~~moddable~~ sushi ingredients, bamboo mats, and instructions for rolling your own sushi. "If you would like to try creating your own, there is space for you to do so," Thor added, pointing to the setup.

Theo wasn't sure about the sushi. It didn't look...bad but he'd never had raw fish so he was hesitant. Maybe if he poured ketchup on them, they'd be okay?

"It's good!" Minako promised, utterly oblivious to the concept of 'personal space' as she used her chopsticks to pick a few different types and plop them down in front of him. "Like, if you like fish, but don't like fishy? You can do yellowtail. It's mellow! Or spicy tuna is, like, the best, and the ginger gives everything a kick."

Sorry, Theo, your hesitance has earned you a helpful manic Japanese girl.

"It's a little new for me," Theo said, scratching his cheek and glancing down at the spread in front of him. "Most of my food was been...cooked."

"It's not, like, dangerous," she promised. "No more than most food, anyway. In the States here, and the EU, it usually gets flash-frozen first, and that kills any parasites."

"But, um, here." She picked out three pieces. "Cali roll - fake crab. Avocado & cream cheese roll. Cucumber & bacon roll - the bacon is cooked."

"Sorry, no offense meant," he promised, picking up the Cucumber and bacon roll since it included bacon and that he did like. "I'm just used to living off food found in microwaves and passed to me through a fast food window."

"Ne, I don't mind. I mean, half the time I just make microwave ramen," Minako confessed, going for a spicy salmon for herself. "I can cook, but, like, nothing amazing. Although I do make a mean onigiri if I do say so myself."

"I tend to leave something like sushi to the professionals. Or my mom."

"My friend's dad might be able to make something like this and not have it be terrible," Theo said, taking a slow bite of the roll he had.

It wasn't...bad. Different and definitely unfamiliar but Theo didn't hate it. "Not bad. Not what I would have thought of when I think raw fish."

Yeah, this was rapidly becoming Billy's favorite class. He'd had some questionable sushi before, and this didn't seem so bad at all.

"Itadakimasu!!!!" Minako cheered, instantly going for her chopsticks and loading up her plate with a speed not normally seen outside a ~~meta for~~ Road Runner cartoon.

And devouring it. All. While preparing seconds.

Snow had never seen anything like sushi before, so she was very hesitant as she took her first bite. She was surprised by how good it tasted.
