Developing Your Personal Style, Thursday, Period 1

"Let's talk about DIY," Petra said today. "Now, I can't teach you to sew in an hour, let's not be crazy, but I can encourage you to learn, because, yeah, you can go out and buy a dress for fifteen bucks at Forever 21, but that's not such a great bargain if it falls apart the first time you wash it, and it's super not a great bargain if you throw it away then, and don't get any more wear out of it. I feel like everybody should at least be able to sew on a button and fix a hem--which you don't even need to sew for, by the way, you can totally use hem tape. But that's basic maintenance and repair, it's not style, so, moving on.

"If you can make your own clothes, or even alter them, you can open up a whole new world to yourself in terms of style. If you can't find what you want, you can make it. If you can't afford it, you can make it for cheaper, I promise you. Or if you find something that's almost, but not quite, you can alter it to be what you want it to be. I make a lot of my clothes. I even made my own pageant costumes, though I obviously don't expect everyone to go to those lengths. But, I'm tall, so most skirts that are supposed to be knee-length are way too short on me, and between my long inseam and some other fit issues we aren't going into right now," though some of the class probably could guess what she was talking about, "it's pretty much impossible for me to find pants off the rack that fit, are long enough, and are anything even remotely approaching comfortable. But I can fix that," she said, striking a heroic pose, "because I...have a sewing machine!"

"Now," she said, returning to a more normal stance, "I've got needles and thread and clothes in various states of repair--don't worry, none of them are mine, I got them at the thrift shop--and some tutorials on basic repairs. If you need any help, or if something's unclear, please ask me, and if you're going to try out the hem tape and you've never used an iron before, please for the love of little green apples ask me. There are instructions with the iron, but still. Ask. I don't want to take anyone to the clinic. On a related note, not that I think anyone could do enough damage to themselves to end up in the clinic with them, but, be careful with the needles, they are pointy. I have thimbles if you need 'em. If you already do know how to sew, I'm sorry, I didn't bring any more advanced projects, but if you have your own stuff you want to go get and work on that's fine, or you can treat this like a refresher."

Minako was...trying. But small, detail stuff totally wasn't her strong-suit when it came to crafty-things.

Kenzi had thimbles on every finger. Making little clicky noises. On the plus side, she could totally work that hem tape.
