First-Aid and Basic Medicine | Tuesday | Period Two
Same deal as usual: some clusters of desks and a bunch of first-aid kits. No dummies this time. You got lucky, class.
"Today we're going to look at burns, which are injuries caused by exposure to fire, chemicals, radiation and high temperatures," Bruce began. "There are four main burn classificationsbut there shall be no links because I don't want your eyes to bleed like mine did. First-degree, second-degree, third-degree, and fourth-degree. The classification quantifies the extent of the damage. A first-degree burn only damages the top layer of skin, appears red and dry, and can be painful but will heal after a week or so. Those are usually treated with over-the-counter skin creams or certain plant combinations, but when you first see one, start with the obvious - run cold water on the burn, clean it, see how much pain medicine the person needs. That stuff. Second-degree burns are much more painful, with multiple skin layers damaged and visible blistering, and will usually leave behind some scarring. Those tend to require heavier antibiotic creams and usually stronger medicine to manage the pain. Third-degree burns damage all layers of skin and look stiff and white or brown and generally don't heal fully, and fourth-degree burns damage not only the skin but layers of fat and muscle underneath, and usually require amputation."
He scratched the back of his neck. "This is a hard subject to demonstrate on a dummy, so instead, you guys have info packets full of pictures of different burns. Work in pairs and try to classify them and discuss how you'd treat them."
Yep. Enjoy the ickiness, guys.
