Archery 101 [Friday, Second Period]

Clint was practically bouncing as he watched everyone file into the Danger Shop. "Hi guys. And gals, I should say, since that's most of you," and yes, that delighted Clint quite a bit. "This is archery class, so if you're in the wrong place, well, you're welcome to stay because I say the more the merrier. I know you're probably tired of the introduction thing by now, but I want to make sure I get everyone's name and I'd like to know how much experience you have with a bow, if any."

Then, Clint motioned to a table of assorted recurve and longbows, all set up but with no arrows yet. There would be time to shoot things once he had a better idea of what and who he was working with. "These are some of the bows we'll be working with. Go ahead and check them out and see how they feel. Everyone's got their own style that they like, and if you happen to have a bow of your own, you can bring that for class."

The end of introduction week is nigh!

"Hey, I'm Alex," she said to the class. "And I don't have much experience with a bow."

Other weapons, yes, but the bow was new.

"That's totally fine, that's why the 101 part is there," Clint said. "What made you decide on this class? If you heard nice things about me, you can totally say so."

Sorry Alex, your teacher was kind of a smug weirdo sometimes.

"Yeah, that's exactly it," Alex said with a little smirk. "And also, shooting arrows seems like a useful skill to have."

"Alec Lightwood," Alec said. "As you know. I'd say I'm... intermediate to advanced?"

"I'd say that as well, inching ever closer to advanced," Clint agreed with a smile. "If we get more angry vegetables flying around, you might get there sooner than later."

"I'm Natalie Adams," Natalie introduced herself, mostly addressing the other students. Clint knew who she was. "I took up archery about six months ago, and am okay enough to at least hit some flying chili peppers, provided they swarm close enough together. And I'm the TA for this workshop."

"Snow White," Snow said. "I don't have any experience, but I want to learn."

For great country-liberating reasons.

"Great, then you've come to the right place," Clint said. "Are you looking more for recreation or hunting purposes?"

He'd learned to ask that question around here.

"I must learn the arts of warfare if I'm to take back my kingdom from Queen Ravenna," Snow said.

Maybe she should've stuck with "hunting."

"Ah, I see," Clint said, getting a little more appropriately solemn. "There are a lot of strong warrior types around, most of whom would probably be willing to help you. We can't have kingdoms in the wrong people's hands, after all. Is that why you came to Fandom?"

"The magpies led me here," Snow said. "I know that must sound very strange, but they helped me escape and brought me to a blue circle of light. My big sibling called it a portal."

"Believe it or not, I've heard stranger things involving portals," Clint said. "But now I'm especially glad you're here, and in one piece too."

"Thank you," Snow said. "Everyone here has been so generous and kind." It was hard to wrap her mind around sometimes, given the past ten years.

"I'm Zee," she said on her turn. "And I've never used a bow, either, but I have decent aim when I'm throwing stuff."

Don't worry, you can't hurt yourself too badly. Thanks Danger Shop!

Alex checked out some of the bows, trying to determine which one was best for her. She was very careful with it, a sign she did have some weapons training. She couldn't wait to learn more about this one.

It was comforting to see such a familiar object as a bow here. Snow picked up a longbow, trying to get a feel for it.

Zeela didn't really know what she was looking for, so she picked up the one that was the biggest and the heaviest, thinking it would shoot furthest.

Well, she thought she looked badass!

Clint, for his part, was staring at his phone a lot and trying to decipher his voicemail.

And Natalie had left a few voicemails before class, and hadn't realized anything was off, yet. Despite that one stray voicemail from Alec.

So, yeah, that was going to be fun.

But hey, she'd already brought her own bow in this week. And that was fun in the most sincere meaning of the word.

"Did you say something about coffee?" Clint asked, giving his phone a little shake.

Natalie raised a mild eyebrow at the phone-shaking, but reached for his takeaway coffee from whatever had happened to be the nearest convenient flat surface before handing it to him.

"Yep."

Clint perked up and took the coffee with a grateful smile. "I was only partly expecting that," he said. "So, how are things going after our great jalapeno adventure?"

"The usual." Nightmares and crap. Oh well. "Alec left me a voicemail meant for his sister. That kind of thing."

"Is voicemail wonky? Is that what this is?" Clint asked. "'Cause I've been getting some inappropriate messages, and my standard for what's inappropriate is pretty high."

"Well, either it's the voicemail, or Alec being unable to handle mundane tech." Which she wouldn't have quite put past him, but. "But if you're getting some too, then it's probably the phones."

"Well, that's good to know. And bad, because now I don't know if the calls I made are all right." Clint shook his phone again, like that would help. Or maybe it just made him feel better.

"Shaking your phone won't help."

Wait, was that something he might not want to hear? Too bad. Something Natalie didn't really want to think about was dawning on her.

"Maybe it's selective in the calls it affects."

But probably not.

"Maybe. Thankfully, Kitty can't use a phone right now, so at least I don't have to worry about her getting anything strange," Clint said. "And let me have my delusions," he added, shaking his phone harder.

"Well," Natalie replied, dryly, "if you break it, at least you can't leave any more voicemails of your own."

"See, look at you with your good ideas," Clint teased. "You make a very good assistant."

"Uh huh."

Natalie's receptiveness to teasing may have been a little... off, right now. Getting trampled over by wondering how likely it was her calls had gone where they were supposed to.

"Think that might help retroactively?"

"I'll keep my fingers crossed if you do the same?" Clint said hopefully.

"Sure."

With Fandom, that was better than nothing.

After class, Zeela made her way over to Clint. "'Scuse me, sir, you got a sec?" she asked, figuring it was best to start politely. "I think there's been a mixup."

"I've got a whole bunch of seconds, in fact," Clint said, smirking. "What's up?"

"I'm supposed to be in this class, but I think some other name got added instead of mine," Zee ~~lied~~ explained. "It's happened in a few other classes, too."

She gave him her best appealing smile. "But I really wanna learn to shoot!"

Really, how could he say no to that kind of enthusiasm? "If you want to learn, I don't mind you being here," he said. "It was Zee, right?"

I almost managed to post without getting sucked into a tumblr vortex. ALMOST!

Just thought I'd throw this out there, but if anyone feels like having their character make dumb/embarrassing rookie archery mistakes, I've made them/see people make them regularly at least three times a week, so feel free to hit me up for suggestions if you're into that kind of detail!

You are a rockstar. :D
