First-Aid and Basic Medicine | Tuesday | Period Two

When students arrived for Bruce's class today, they might notice that the classroom was fairly low-tech for Fandom standards, considering that teachers here had access to literally any resource they could possibly program. In this room, however, there was a chalkboard, just enough clusters of desks for the number of students registered, and a large paper bag on the desk at the front. Other than that, besides the awkward-looking Bruce standing by the blackboard, the room was pretty bare.

Bruce waited until everyone was seated and then a few minutes on top of that, then gave up hovering by the front and took a few steps forward, clearing his throat to signal that class was starting. "Uh, hi," he greeted the class. "I'm Dr. Banner. This is First-Aid and Basic Medicine, so if that's not what you're here for, you should probably check your schedule again and figure out where you're supposed to be. Most of you probably know your way around this building better than I do.

"This semester, we're going to look at some simple first-aid techniques, uh, obviously, such as CPR, constructing splints, identifying and handling small injuries, treating burns, and how to take care of all that in a pressured environment without a lot of surplus resources at hand. We've got seven weeks to do all that, which is a while longer than the typical first-aid course, so I think there's a good chance we can get it done."

He sounded… pretty much like he wasn't all that confident about that, but had told that confidence was an important quality to exude here and was now pretending. Because that was exactly the case.

"I guess we should start with getting to know each other," Bruce contined, scratching the back of his neck. "So if you could all go around and introduce yourself quickly…? I guess give your name, your year, where and when you're from, one general subject that interests you academically in your other coursework, and if you don't mind sharing, why you were interested in taking this class. I'm, like I said, Dr. Banner, I'm a nuclear physicist, and I'm teaching this because… I was told it would be useful to have on the curriculum."

That wasn't a cop-out at all, nooo. But Bruce was allergic to giving out personal information, anyway. He gestured to the students now, hoping that someone would volunteer to begin the introductions so that he wouldn't have to call on people who didn't want to go.

After the last student had finished his or her introduction, Bruce swung his arms loosely, took his time looking around the room to make sure no one had been skipped, then reached for the large paper bag by the desk in the front and began unloading several boxes of a board game that might look familiar to some students.

"A lot of medical work is about being precise but timely," Bruce said, holding up one box. "Because what you're doing is important and you should be efficient, but doing something wrong can be worse than doing it too slowly or not at all. So, today I want you to get into small groups and play a game that balances speed and accuracy and is sort of thematically appropriate. The board is set up like a person, and the way to play is to take turns removing parts of the, uh, patient's body on the board and try not to hit the sides of the openings. It's, uh… I don't think it's quite this simple when the patients aren't metal with plastic organs, but this is what we have to work with. So… find a partner or two and come get a box and you can play Operation for the rest of class."

That was it, right? There was nothing else he needed to say? Bruce glanced around the classroom again to see if anyone looked like they were expecting more information, and then, relieved to be done, took a seat at his desk.

"Oh, and – talk to me if you have any questions," he added. "Or if you're interested in being a teaching assistant. Um. Thanks."

There. That had been… not terrible, but not easy either. He was going to be slightly on edge for the rest of class, because wow was he not cut out for this, but at the very least, now he knew that his students weren't going to revolt and kill him on his first day. Probably.

"I'm Stiles---just ignore the name on the roster, believe me, it'll make your life easier. I'm a rising senior which is scary to think about and I'm from Beacon Hills, California." Which is also a scary thing to think about. "I'm taking this class because I'm a human in a decidedly non-human environment and I figured this would help me be more useful."

The other question took some time to think about. "What am I not interested in would be an easier question to answer. Well...I guess chemistry but I think that's more my old teacher being an ass than the subject itself. I do really like history and folklore."

He also liked to talk a lot, just in case you hadn't noticed.

"I'm Alex Aaron, I'm a--huh, I guess I'm a junior now..." How the heck did that happen? "I like history, and I was interested in this class because I saw the teacher's name I thought it might be useful because I wanna be a hero."

Chaz kept trying to fold into himself during the introduction, which was made somewhat more awkward as he was pretty sure he had grown another inch over the past few months.

"Uh, I'm Chaz Villette. I'm a Fre-Sophomore. I like statistics and math and I think First-Aid is something everyone should know?"

"My name is Sholeh and I'm from Ephemera, which isn't anything like this world," She said shyly. She figured people could figure that out from just the way she was dressed, but sometimes it helped to spell it out, too. "I like pretty much every subject, but especially ones where we get to understand how the world works, and literature."

How it works and how it thinks. Best two ways for understanding the world itself.

"I'm in this class because I think it would be useful information to have." She squared her shoulders a bit and added, "I don't want to be helpless in an emergency."

Again.

"Not like the ones I'm thinking of," Sholeh said, warming a little under Bruce's praise. "But there are always injuries that could benefit from people with skills who can think fast."

She'd been thinking about the emergencies on the island, but now that he mentioned it, there really weren't places or situations where First Aid wouldn't be useful.

"I'm glad to be here, sir," Sholeh said with a smile. "Thank you for teaching it."

"I'm Ulrik, and a recent graduate so I'm TAing for this class," he smiled. "Which hopefully will not put anyone else off if they're interested in the job. I'm interested in engineering and invention, and I am taking this class- well, partially because I need a reason to stick around for the summer, but this class specifically because the skills will likely be useful back home."

Re: Introduce Yourself

[identity profile] nomelancholy.livejournal.com 2013-05-14 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Reverse engineering, actually," Ulrik admitted. "It's only the year 1637 back home, but there was this incident," because there really was no other word for it, "a few years ago that resulted in a small American town from this time period being transplanted to the middle of what you'd call Germany. It made things interesting."

To say the least.

"Popular opinion seems to be equally divided between 'bizarre natural disaster', 'God', and 'Satan'," Ulrik offered. "The area transported consists of a perfect hemisphere, though. And part of me suspects there's now a world out there with a chunk of Germany in the middle of West Virginia."

"Toby Logan, I'll be going in to Gr- uh, a junior, I guess," the American system was still pretty weird, okay. Why couldn't they just use numbers? "I like... history, I guess, and I'm here because- um," he blushed, trying to figure out a way to phrase it that didn't sound completely stupid. "I don't know, really. I just- sometimes I think maybe I could- be the kind of person who helps people."

And yes, I have two characters in the same class. DEAL WITH IIIIT.

Rilla, even after all of these years, loathed introduction time. "I'm Rilla Blythe," she said, enunciating precisely, "and next year is my final year in school. Academics don't really interest me, to be quite frank, but I am taking care of a little boy who's prone to catching colic and croup, so I thought this class would be useful."

"Surreal, I am what you call the... junior? Junior," she confirmed. "I grew up in Terreille, mostly Hayll, and no, you haven't been there. It's not tourist-friendly to humans." Understatement? Oh yes. "I tend to be the one stabbing someone rather than putting a bandage on them."

Which to Surreal, said everything about why she was in the class.

[identity profile] harpy-daughter.livejournal.com 2013-05-14 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Surreal gave him what was probably a puzzled look for a moment before she understood what he was saying. "I'm Blood, a witch. We bleed and break bones, we get sick," she replied with a shrug. "We have healers, but they can't fix everything. Starvation, violence, disease, we can die just like humans."

"But we have magic, and more temper than sense sometimes, especially the males." Her grin was slightly unrepentant. "Which is why I want to learn how to patch up afterwards. More powers, more boom. More boom, more blood."

"I'm Evan Sabahnur," Evan said, when his turn rolled around. "I'm from a present-day Earth with superhumans in it," because he wasn't going to say 'Kansas' ever again. He kind of paused after that line, in fact, frowning a little before getting his bearings again. "I'm a big fan of reading and baseball, and I can lose hours to one or the other, and I'm in this class because I've been in too many situations where somebody could get hurt, and I don't want to find myself at a loss for how to help them."

There, that was pretty much it, right?

"I'm Billy Kaplan, and I'm a senior." Oh god oh god how had that happened? "I'm from New York, present day--well, fairly present, I think I'm a few years behind but not as far behind as some people--I like history and mythology a lot, and I took this class..." Well, because he'd seen "Dr. Banner" and squealed like a squealy thing. "Because knowing non-magical ways to heal people always seems like a good thing."

"My name is Marasiah Fel, I'm a junior from a different galaxy, and I'm interested in any subject that might be useful, which is also why I'm taking this class." She didn't really want to get into 'I might need to know battlefield medicine' in class.
