Public Speaking [Tuesday April 23, 2013, 1st period]

"Welcome to your final exam, kids," Josh said with an easy smile as he sat behind his desk and drank his coffee. "Ten minutes each of an instructional speech to newcomers about life in Fandom."

He waved at the video camera. "These are being recorded and I'll be sending the best of them onto Principal Winchester, so...no pressure. It's been great teaching all of you. For those of you heading to college and real life next year, best of luck. Feel free to call me if you need a letter of recommendation or anything."

He pointed at the first student. "Get us started."

Maddie actually had worked on this, because she knew she'd be meeting new kids this summer and it was good practice in telling them things they needed to know without being accidentally insulting, or whatever. And the parts she definitely knew about (you might turn into a boy, have kids running around, turn into an animal, or get locked in a dungeon for a week) she sounded nice and informed about.

It was just that she'd only been here a semester and didn't know that much, so by the end of her time she just started trying to talk really slowly.

The one good thing about bbeing his dad's kids was he got to hear all the speeches and figure out what worked and didn't. So Lex's was kinda awesome.

"Irashaimase!" Minako cheered, bowing deeply for the camera. "I'm Aino Minako - but you can call me Minako - and I'm here today to give you a basic introduction to Fandom High!"

"If you're a new student, you're going to be assigned what the school calls a 'Big Sibling' to help you transition to boarding school culture," she continued, totally earnest and with a bounce. "Now, you do not need to worry about your sibling doing any sort of hazing or pulling mean pranks, because we have Principal Winchester! She doesn't tolerate any mean-spirits, so you know that you can rely on you sibling to get you through the first few confusing weeks."

"Remember, even if you've been to boarding school before, you're in for a completely different experience with Fandom High! We have people here from places you've only dreamed about, and it's a melding pot of culture all its own!" Minako threw a 'V for Victory' sign and winked. "After all, they've got the Japanese exchange student doing this video, ne? So you'll need to keep a totally open mind, and remember, what might be impossible or unacceptable at home may be totally OK here at Fandom!"

Minako's speech went on like that for the full ten minuets, going over co-ed rooms, unusual pets, types of classes, and a cheerful reminder at the end that the laws of physics were more like suggestions.

Ten minutes was more than she was used to having to work with, but Petra had this in the bag. Her speech was warm and welcoming, along with being informative, with a certain unavoidable air of "yes I realize this sounds crazy, but."

Where was the fun in this if you couldn't scare the new kids? Come on, Josh.

Richie tried but the nice men in the white coats might have been called before the end of his speech. He just couldn't resist mentioning the zombies.

Jessica's speech mostly focused on the triumvirate of keeping one's eyes, ears, and mind open to whatever might happen around here. And if that didn't work, look out for the pink pony.

Yes, she somehow got ten minutes out of that.
