Public Speaking [Tuesday, April 16, 2013]

"Right, well, last week completely blew," Josh began without preface, drinking from his precious, precious mug of coffee. "And next week is your final exam. For that I would like you to prepare a ten minute informational speech for newcomers to the island. Tell them all the things you wish someone had told you, and present it in a way where the person hearing you won't immediately dismiss you as being completely insane."

He leaned back against his desk. "But for today, we're going to do some improv speaking. Stand up, I'll give you a topic and you just get to go without any preparation time. It'll be fun!"

Or a disaster. One of those.

"If I had a magic wand, the first thing I'd do is make sure everyone else had one too," Gert began. That was a really terrible start, Gert. "I don't want to be the one person with magic powers while everyone else has to rely on me to make good choices. Then I'd do things to help the world, like making sure people have more freedom to do what they want as long as it's not hurting anyone. And then I'd do stuff for myself and my friends, but only after I ran out of ways to help everyone else."

Uh huh.

"42," Maddie said. "Thank you."

She sat back down.

"Globalization," Peter said, sitting up straight and giving the room a bright-eyed look, "is about context. It's about acknowledging the qualities and values we all share, and tying them to a greater network. It's about making sure that food from American farmers make it to the heart of Africa so that children won't starve. It's about making sure governments choose to work together, rather than pull violently apart. If done wrong, it is depersonalization of our life and our livelihood, it's distance between people. If done well, it means keeping the local local but making global what benefits us all. Let's do it well."

Then he sank back in his seat and whipped Loki's phone out again. Emails.

"My hobby is collecting clothes in mysterious dungeons," Jessica said. "I never thought I'd get a chance to really run with a hobby like that, but last week was a boom period for me. By the end of the week, I was dressed in a bizarre outfit that combined space, medieval, preppy, and hipster fashions, and I couldn't be happier about it."

That's what she was going with, yes.

"Like, a newspaper?" Richie asked. "Or something else? Whatever, this'll work either way."

"Okay, so you're gonna want to read me first guys," Richie said. "That's kind of the point. Otherwise I'll get some sort of identity crisis because who wants to be an unread paper? Nobody. So read me, maybe use me in a craft project or let your kid color on me. Just, please, whatever you do, don't use me to line a birdcage. No paper deserves that. Not even a tabloid."
