Second day back, and Kaidan was still feeling jittery and antsy and he'd had several awkward conversations already. Not only that, but there was this thudding pain centered right behind his eye that didn't seem to know whether it wanted to turn into a full-blown migraine or not. It wasn't... exactly putting him in a sporting mood.

"So today we're going to do two things," he announced to the class. "First, you can show off what you built last week. Then..."

He gestured at the rest of the Danger Shop behind them, which was set up with a variety of targets, some made of cardboard, some made of wood. A track had been drawn on the ground as well - a couple of targets on there, all cardboard, but not a lot.

"We're taking the battlebots for a test drive."

No better way to channel frustration than that, right?

There are cardboard targets and there are wooden targets. There are targets shaped like robots and there are targets that are just plain squares.

How many of them can your battlebot wreck?

All targets regenerate after a minute or two.

Smashing things up suited Bay just fine today. She tweaked her battlebot a bit, darkening some of the feather pattern with a marker, and waited for Anakin so they could smash things.

She miiiight have been scoping out the teacher while she waited. So he was practically as old as her dad, so what? That hadn't stopped Daphne from her little thing with Jeff for.

Anakin was checking up on the latest version of the battlebot code on his datapad as he came over, and if he was at all more distracted than usual he was just chalking it up to being worried the code wasn't completely up to (his unreasonably high) expectations. Conveniently, smashing things would alleviate that just fine, too.

"I guess now we get to see if the targeting system needs to be fine-tuned any more, huh?"

He'd only been working on that for two weeks. It could stand to be better!

"I guess," Bay agreed, and if she sounded faintly distracted, it was only because somehow she had never noticed Anakin was cute before. Funny how that worked. "How do you think it is? I know I wasn't much use on the non-artsy pieces."

Well, Anakin had never noticed. Every now and then he'd have young Jedi and random bystanders back home following him around with dreamy expressions, and he always just assumed it was because his family was famous. If he felt compelled to actually pay attention to her while he spoke, though, he had no explanation for why. (Sorry about any teeth-grinding you might be doing right about now, Tahiri-on-Yavin-Four.)

"I think it'll do for a test run," he replied, running a hand through his hair in a futile attempt to keep it from falling into his eyes. "I can work out the snags later. But," he added, because being complimentary seemed like a thing to do, "you made the bot look a lot better than I would have, that's for sure."

Bay's fingers twitched; watching Anakin touch his hair that way made her want to do the same. (Down, girl.)

"That was the fun part," she said. "You did all the actual work. Let's see if we can get it to kick some cardboard ass."

Anakin grinned; this was always the sort of thing that he got excited about, but he was a little extra enthusiastic today. Was that strange? Nah.

"It was fun. I think we made a pretty good team. Now let's go destroy things."

"Hells yeah," Bay said, holding her hand up for a fistbump. "You can do the honors of smashing the first target. I'll observe."

Anakin looked confused for a second, but brought his fist up to bump it lightly against hers.

"Okay, then, let's do this."

. . . he totally did not bounce on his toes before he started steering the battlebot, except he did.

He also totally did not whoop when he deployed one of the bot's retractable arms and it reduced a wooden target to rubble, either, except he did.

"Astral!"

Will your battlebot have the fastest time around this track? You'll have to test it.

Just don't get it stuck on those targets along the way.

...Fastest? Well, no. A battlebot shaped like a crawling baby was not going to make very good time around a track.

On the other hand, making it crawl right over the targets was vaguely distracting Ace from her itchy mood.

For the first three minutes or so, until she started thinking about where little robot babies would even come from, which got her picturing... things. Shiny things. Shiny humanoid things. Shiny adult-shaped humanoid things.

And wondering if they had enough left-over parts to try building one.

...for science.

"You look like you're having a thought," Topher commented to his partner. "Is it a destructive one?"

Said eagerly, like he was asking her if she was thinking of buying him cake.

"No, which is unusual for me. More like ...constructive?" No, more like reproductive.

"Gross," Topher informed her. "You should get rid of that thought." Charming, Topher.

"Constructing a bigger battlebot," Ace specified. Which was true; she just casually left out the and more anatomically correct part.

"Oh." Hmm. Topher needed to mull that over for a second. "I assume by 'bigger' you also mean that it would be more destructive than the baby one?"

"...Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. Something hefty, that you could really bang into the wall."

That sounded awesome. "Sure, yeah," Topher decided. "Let's do it. Now? I think we should start working on it now."

Was sex pollen... making him crave more science? Yes, yes it was.

"Reckon Alenko's got a jackhammer we could attach to it?"

For...reasons.

"Probably not," Topher sighed. "He'd say it's too destructive. Wait, why?"

"Brink, the answer to 'jackhammer' should never be 'why?'. Ever."

Not only because she didn't have a good reply for it, but that was one of the reasons.

Topher considered that. "Fair enough," he decided. "So where should we get one?"

"That shop in town?"

The shop that ran through Ace's mind at that moment was probably not the shop that would run through Topher's.

Nor did they sell jackhammers. At least not by that name.

"I'll check if we have some in the next day or so," Topher decided. "I can probably steal some and tell Tony it was a really mean squirrel."

What, did she not mean Stark Industries?
