This week, Jono had left a note on the classroom door directing his students to the library, where he was waiting for them with a small grin on his lips. It felt good to be in here today. He'd spent most of his Sundays in this very room throughout high school, after all.

"We're in the middle of a hypothetical invasion," Jonothon informed his class once it looked like they had all arrived. "We don't know what it is or where it came from, all that we really know is that the island is covered with monsters. Some of them spend a great deal of time near the water, and they look suspiciously like turtles, except that they're always carrying a saucer of water on the top of their head. They've already tried to pull people under the water, and at one point they chased a person halfway across the park in order to steal their picnic basket just so they could pick the fillings out of the cucumber sandwiches that were inside."

He smirked a little.

"Some of the other monsters are something that look almost as much man they do bird, with faces that are human except for those ridiculously long noses they've got. They spend most of their time guarding the outskirts of the preserve, and aren't afraid to use the feather fans they carry to blow trespassers away with gusts of wind... or to grow or shrink a person's nose if they're feeling more playful than antagonistic." He gave a small wave of his hand out toward the stacks. "Your mission today is to figure out what these creatures are, and, if possible, how th'hell to get them to leave. Or, at least, to get them to stop attacking the locals. And you have one class period and all th'resources in the library outside of Special Collections in order to do it. We'll take the last ten minutes to clean up any books you've left around. Let's figure out how to save our island, hm?"

"So it only buries the people you don't like?" Sorry, Jono, John's just got a 'special' sense of humor. "Handy, that. Maybe I ought to send a few people invitations to come visit."

At least it was the sort of sense of humour that Jonothon could appreciate. Morbid suited him just fine.

"Oh, it'll still bury th'good ones," he replied, with a small wave of his hand. "But th'rotten ones have a smaller chance of attracting the cavalry that rushes in to save the day when people need it th'most."

Because this place. This place.

"White knights of the oppressed? Here?" John pressed a hand to his heart melodramatically. "Perish the thought."

"Mmm, I know. You'd never guess it to look at this place." Jonothon gave his head a shake. "That's half the reason I taught this class, honestly. Because I'd rather half the students in the school not get themselves killed while trying to play the hero."

He glanced around the room, frowning a little.

"Not nearly as many of them were raised to be soldiers as they'd like to let on."

John snorted in disgust. "Raising them as soldiers or heroes is the fastest bloody way to get 'em killed," he pointed out. "What the hell happened to telling kids 'run away from the man with the gun?' Is it that hard for them to get?"

"Around here?" Jono raised his eyebrows slightly. "Hell, I know where they're coming from. I had to learn to fight around their age, too, and it's not like that need ever went away. I can even understand how for some of them, it's something they will have to know when they go back to their respective nightmares after graduation. But the ones who never had to fight, the ones who won't need to when they leave... they're just chasing trouble when trouble comes to this place, I'm afraid."

He sighed, wrinkled his nose, and glanced back at John.

"The whole 'child soldiers' thing never did sit well with me. I'm not terribly popular back home for having that opinion, unfortunately."
