The Library, Thursday

Evan was a little bit distracted on the job today, he was sorry to admit. Sure, it was the last week before break, and everyone else was going to be going to Turkey. He, on the other hand, had been asked to head back to the Jean Grey School to check in with some of his instructors, to let them know that he was doing well even if he wasn't going to a school specifically for mutants.

There was something in there about a field trip, too, but today he was mostly just going over a list of things that he'd probably want to bring with him when he went. The JGS had their own library, so at least he was all set in that regard...

Hm.

A second week with a visitor! How exciting.

"Hello, Evan!" Sholeh called from the doorway, figuring she could be excused for a little noise since she wasn't yet in the library. She waved and crossed over to the circulation desk. "Oooh, getting ready for the trip?"

Sholeh was a little excited about traveling, truth be told.

Evan smiled up at her, giving her a little wave as she approached the desk.

"Yes and no," he replied. "I have an appointment to check in with my teachers at my old school over the break, so I'm going to be missing the spring trip, I'm afraid. They... want to know how I'm doing, in a school that's mostly for humans."

It was a fairly legitimate concern, really.

"Oh." Sholeh paused momentarily and when she did continue, her smile had dimmed a bit. "Oh, I had thought that we might share books, since one person should only take so many..."

She gave herself a little shake and deliberately broadened her smile. She must have sounded so selfish right there! "What I mean to say is, how lovely for you to be going back to your old school! You'll get to see some of your old friends again. I do hope your teachers there will approve of your progress!"

Oh, that had Evan trying not to frown, himself.

"Honestly... I'd rather be going on the trip with you and everybody else. I don't really miss that school enough to want to miss out on going to Turkey for it. But it'll just be for a few days... Maybe I'll even be able to catch up, or something?"

"That would be quite nice," Sholeh said, nodding a bit. "I can't think of anyone I'd rather talk about Turkish history with."

But if he couldn't catch up, maybe that would just upset him more to hear. "But I'm sure to find other people to talk with. And I'll write you lots of postcards!"

"Postcards would be neat!" Evan was easily pleased, you see. "And we can catch up about everything at the end of break, too! Your trip and mine. I think the Jean Grey School is even planning a field trip of their own, and I'm invited."

... Granted, Genosha wasn't exactly on Evan's big list of happy places to visit.

Because a trip to Genosha only heralded the best and brightest things, of course.

"Will you write me postcards as well?" Sholeh asked. "I think that would be great fun! Then we could exchange them when we meet up again, read them, and talk about all the fun things we did!"

At Genosha. Yes.

Visit sunny Genosha! A paradise for mutant kind! Be treated like an equal, be treated normal!

Until the Sentinels come along.

"I... could try," Evan decided, smiling gamely. "Postcards from Westchester, at least. It is a really pretty area. I think you'd like it!"

Half the school was made of ice! The school grounds themselves were alive! The building wanted to kill you! It was like adventure!

Well, not that Evan had told Sholeh where he was going for their trip. Or that she'd know anything about it even if he had.

"You'll definitely have to send me one from their library," Sholeh said, dimpling. "And maybe another from the cafeteria. Just so I know how it compares."

"The cafeteria food is usually pretty good," Evan offered, smiling faintly. "The teaching staff usually switches off on cooking duties each week, unless they use the Foodblimp 3000. Professor Guthrie's fried chicken is amazing, Professor Drake's sloppy joes are pretty good... Professor Starsmore mostly just makes things with really weird names, but it's pretty good, too. It's kind of strange when Professor Grey cooks, though. We get all these weird foods from the future, like plantato leek soup sandwiches."

A plantato, as the students had discovered that day, was a future hybrid of a potato and a plantain.

Also, 'soup sandwiches.'

Yeah.

"Wait--our Professor Starsmore?" Sholeh asked, blinking in surprise. "Did he follow you to this school? Can't he just send reports back so you can come on the trip?"

The soup sandwiches were interesting, and she'd almost certainly ask about those later, but Professor Starsmore knew about her and her sisters. He had precedence.

"He's... kind of like our Professor Starsmore," Evan ventured, tilting his head a little. "But maybe more like a Professor Starsmore from the future? The one back home looks... a lot different."

Less like Evan himself, say.

"I think it's one of those weird Fandom timeline things."

"Weird timeline things?" Sholeh asked. That was one thing that she'd had yet to encounter here. "How can he be both here and there at the same time? But be in the future? Did he come back in time?"

That didn't even make sense Evan! Where was a the logic?

"I don't think that's it, exactly," Evan offered, scuffing his foot and trying to find a good way to put it. "It's more like... the Causeway and portals all lead to different places, right? Like where you came from and where I came from, they're pretty fantastically different from one another. But, on top of those different places, time has different stops along the way, too. I came from a place that's really close to Fandom's present. The Professor Starsmore that's here... I think he's from a place that's somewhere in my past? So he's the same person, he just stepped through... a different door, sort of?"

He was hoping that made sense. It was kind of confusing to him, too. Maybe he'd ask Vice Principal McCoy to come up with a better explanation while he was there.

"So he didn't come across the Causeway like you did?" Sholeh asked, still confused and being a little too literal about things. "I came over a bridge, so that might be why I'm from such a different place."

"I'm not sure how he got here," Evan admitted, frowning thoughtfully. "He was here long before I was, I think. I haven't really spoken to him since I got here."

Come to think of it, he really hadn't spoken to him much back at the Jean Grey School, either. And it wasn't until he saw Jono's face here that he even began to be able to guess at why.

"I'm his TA this semester," Sholeh said proudly. "And I was in his class last semester. He teaches really useful things! You should take one of his classes sometime and see!"

She flashed him a mischievous smile. "I could help you with your homework, if you're worried about that."

"Are you going to fly me across the island?" Evan teased, answering her smile with one of his own. "With an offer like that, you've almost got me tempted, you know."

Almost. But the idea of taking a class under a teacher who didn't want him there was probably going to deter him.

"Well, no," Sholeh admitted, giving Evan a small smile. "But I would walk with you across it and we could pick out pretty places to read?"

Try to say thatwasn't a compelling argument, Evan!

That was a really compelling argument, actually!

"But can't we do that any time?"

A beat.

"And if so, can we do it more?"

"We can!" Sholeh said with a happy smile. "But maybe more when the weather warms up? I get cold easily."

Skinny as she was, she felt the winter cold to her bones.

"That sounds just fine," Evan decided, smiling a little more. He wasn't nearly bold enough to suggest that he keep her warm, though the thought had crossed his mind, at least for a moment. "It's a good thing Spring is just around the corner."

That was fine. Her sisters were making enough comments on his behalf anyway.

"I'm looking forward to it," she replied, trying not to blush at their commentary. "To spring and walks both. And to writing you those postcards, since you won't be there to enjoy the break with me. Us. The school."
