Improving Your Skills [Friday, 3rd Period]

When the students arrived at the Danger Shop today, they'd find it set up like a few weeks ago, with a variety of targets, training dummies, and the weapons.

Except this time, there were also boxes of chocolates set out. Hurray, discounted holiday candy!

"Hey folks. I figured it might be a good idea to get some more defensive practice in today," he said, feeling much more confident about the Danger Shop's programming this time. "If you want to use a different weapon this time, you can, or stick with what you picked last time to try to get better at it. Oh and, uh, try not to get chocolate on anything." In case that needed to be said.

Like it's actually Friday, not the Friday you thought it was yesterday. >.>

And/or enjoy some chocolate.

There was a row of targets set up at varying distances along one of the walls, for anyone who preferred to fight from afar.

Also a good method for getting out pent up anger!

Just don't actually try to kill each other, please, thanks.

Clint was shooting too today, but he'd totally stop if anyone needed to talk to him.

Sparkle

Kate was also shooting (though really she should just start bringing her own bow to this class). Possibly she was (as usual) trying to outshoot Clint, but that little competition was all in her head.

Sparkle came right back to the targets this week, picking up a bow and doing a fairly decent job of actually letting the arrows fly this time around.

This might have been because he was pretending to be Cupid, or it might have been because he was picturing the targets as the faces of the thugs that had roughed him up last week. Or both, at any given moment, leading to crazy mental images of eyeless gang toughs performing inappropriate acts with one another in dark alleyways.

Catharsis! You get it your way, Sparkle will get it his.

Hanna did have a lot of pent up anger, and so she was back to hitting a dummy like she did a few weeks ago. This time, she pictured 'A' as her target. It worked for her.

Stephanie had been planning on going over to flail pathetically at a dummy as if she had no clue what she was doing, but she couldn't help noticing what Hanna was up to.

"Whoa there, sister, everything okay?"

So she got concerned about people sometimes. Sue her.

Weapons again. Lovely.

Gert was going to kick a training dummy, almost like she was actually annoyed at something. Imagine that.

"What?" Hanna replied, unaware that her actions were causing concern. "I'm fine. Just practicing."

She landed a punch on the dummy's head as she said those last words.

Stephanie smiled slightly. "You remind me of me on a bad day -- or at least how I picture myself on a bad day when I don't have a handy training dummy to whack around, since I don't usually carry one around with me . . ."

Rambling, Steph. Stop it.

She cleared her throat. "Which is to say, hey, this is me not judging, 'cause why not have some cardio on the side to go with your venting, buuuuuuuut this may be me assuming things."

Sorry, Hanna. The vigilante instincts had to manifest themselves somehow.

Emily Thorne

Bow in hand, Emily decided to see if she could show off. She quickly decided she was fairly average when it came to arrows, and that she was never shooting one at someone she wasn't particularly fond of. That's why there were guns after all.

But now need to get all worked out, right? She actually was in a good mood, so she would simply keep trying to get a bullseye.

Hanna smiled sheepishly. "Am I that obvious?"

She took a break for a moment. "There are a few people at home I'd like to punch."

She wasn't one to sugarcoat. "Punching the dummy instead will get me in less trouble, I think."

"Oh, I know the feeling," Stephanie told her, waving one hand for emphasis. "And then I broke a finger on a heavy bag at my old school's gym after a really irritating day --" which wasn't quite true, since it had been in the Batcave and Bruce had been on her case all day about one tiny stupid mistake, but the point stood -- "and got in trouble with my piano teacher for it."

Again, for 'piano teacher,' substitute 'Batman.'

"So the moral of the story, I guess, would be to punch carefully," she concluded.

That competition may have been in her head, but that didn't mean Clint didn't notice. He also noticed that she was really, really good. "Are you sure you don't have any superpowers?" he asked.

Hanna nodded. "Sounds like very good advice."

She couldn't help wincing. "Breaking a finger punching a bag? Ouch."

Stephanie made a face. "I got way too carried away. But now it's something I can point to as a learning experience!"

That was a terrible pun, Steph.

Hanna gave a bemused smile. She totally got that pun! "Did it help at all? The venting that day? I mean before the unfortunate broken bone incident."

"Fabulously. Too bad it got cancelled out by the lecture I got afterward," Stephanie said, rolling her eyes. Thanks ever so, Bruce.

The look she gave him probably was answer enough. "Really? You're asking me that?"

...not that someone was defensive at all.

"So you broke your finger and got lectured because of it?" Hanna said incredulously. "Harsh."

"Mmmm," Stephanie said, her tone a little too noncommittal (the incident still stung a bit). "For some bizarre reason my piano teacher thinks I need those fingers, so I guess I should've seen it coming."

She snickered. "Unlike the punching bag, that time. Never knew what hit it."

Hanna grinned. "Guess it's good it was a punching bag and not a person? Then you'd probably be saying, 'You shoulda seen the other guy.' Or something."

"Punching bags and training dummies," Stephanie remarked wryly, "are nine hundred and ninety-nine percent less likely to land you in detention, but I'd like to disclaim that by saying I'm not that great at math."

"Well that's something we have in common," Hanna said with a laugh. "I don't get along with math. But that sounds right!"

"Works for me." Stephanie held a hand up in the universal (as opposed to multiversal) high-five gesture.

Maddie Berry

"I didn't mean it in an insulting way," Clint said. "You're just really good for--well, for anyone."

Good job changing the end of that sentence, Barton.

Kate shrugged, unable not to be pleased with the compliment. "Thanks. It's just practice." She tilted her head. "Do you think superpowers would even help with a bow?"

"Maybe. If you had a heavy bow and you had better strength to pull it?" Clint said. "But really, I don't think anyone special can do what we do."

"The one time I let someone with superstrength draw my bow, he nearly snapped it," she said, making a face. And Eli had never touched her bow again. "Besides. We're plenty special."

...that could be taken in so many different ways, yes.
