Industrial Arts, Tuesday

"Welcome back."

The space at the front of the class had been cleared of everything besides the desk, which Kaidan was currently perched on top of. "Today, you get to show off," he said. "Talk about your woodworking project, talk about what you're doing with the battlebot. But you have to talk about something."

He crossed his arms. "You've all got your partners now - Jessica, Lex, I didn't get a sign-up from you, so you're a team. Bucky, you're with me." He had a feeling this could only end in tears otherwise - or a roomba with a knife on top. (Actually, it might still end up with a roomba with a knife on top.) "Other than the presentations, today is your planning class. Huddle up with your partner and draw up plans if you haven't done so already. If you have, get to work. Next week, we'll be focusing on auto repair, so you might not have time to work."

"First person takes the floor..." He glanced over the class. "You."

After the presentations, Bay went over to the area for battlebot building and waited for Anakin. She'd sketched a couple battlebot designs; she wasn't sure any of them would do silly things like "work," but if what they wanted was a cool-looking robot, Bay had that covered.

Topher didn't want to spoil the surprise offense tactics for his competition, so he was considering just making stuff up. He had a feeling that Ace might be better at that than he was, so he was going to wait.

What Anakin had on his datapad was a list of components he already had, a list of components he knew he could get, and several versions of battlebot code in varying degrees of completion. (Technically, some of them were appropriated and adapted from the code he'd been working on for his combat training droid, but if it worked it worked, right?)

"What have we got?" he asked as he sat down, absently rubbing a spot of grease off his cheek.

"Team Boom Baby?" Ace suggested, while honestly thinking along similar lines herself regarding the battlebot presentation. "We could make the bot look like a giant kid in a nappy!"

I get a cookie for noticing it originally said Team Boob Baby before hitting Post.

Which would explain the wobbliness! Yes!

Bay fanned open her sketchbook. "I don't know why, but I was thinking sort of vaguely avian?" she offered. One of the battlebots she'd drawn resembled an eagle; another, a steampunk owl.

"...You get to figure out how to make it work, by the way."

"I had a feeling," Anakin told her wryly, but in an eager tone that suggested he had no problem with that arrangement. "I hadn't thought about building one that can fly, but I know how to do it."

Okay, maybe he'd taken a bit of an intuitive leap from 'vaguely avian' to 'flight-capable, but it would be a challenge, and he was almost bouncing with excitement at the idea.

"That would kick ass," Bay said enthusiastically. "I would have been fine with a stork or an emu or whatever but if you can make it fly and drop onto the other team's bot -- we'd have to win, right?"

Re: Battlebot Partners

[identity profile] nonelikemesince.livejournal.com 2013-02-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"It'll need a few more tricks than that, but it would give us an edge," Anakin replied, already entering notes into his datapad. In a lower voice he added, "I've got some ideas for that already."

He pulled up a file on the datapad and slid it over so she could see without (hopefully) anyone else eavesdropping: it included ideas like creating oil slicks, EMP pulses to temporarily freeze up the other bot's circuitry, and finding a way to interface with the other bot's programming and hack its code.

"Spice," which probably sounded very different to Bay than it did to him, "stolen goods, whatever they paid him to do," he said, shrugging; he could be matter-of-fact about it. "Mom would never let him get away with that any more, but the skills keep ending up useful."

Bucky looked around the room, and nothing seemed familiar. Honestly, he couldn't remember what he'd made, and couldn't care less what it had been. That was weeks ago.

"I made... uh... one moment."

He looked around the room some more.

"I made that," he decided, pointing at the bandsaw. "And it's the best whatever-it-is that you've ever seen, am I right? I'm just awesome like that. Give me an A, now."

Re: Battlebot Partners

[identity profile] monkeymonkeydie.livejournal.com 2013-02-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Currently, Bucky's crudely-drawn battlebot plans called for a dog wearing a robot costume made out of cardboard boxes and aluminum foil and carrying an electric carving knife. The extension cord for the carving knife was going to be a problem, and he was trying to figure out how to keep it from getting tangled up in everything.

Apparently, the fact that most electric knives less than 20 years old were cordless had completely eluded him.

Bay shrugged. "Just retired. He was getting old, you know?"

"Your dad gave up the smuggling thing for your mom?"

"More or less." Anakin rolled his eyes, but affectionately. "They met when they both got captured by the Empire, and he ended up getting roped into the Rebellion because of her. And Mom's a politician, so . . ."

He shrugged. "You know."

"Wicked!" If only Ace had taken Ethics, she'd have so many more evil ideas. Though maybe she didn't need the help. "And it can shoot blue bouncy gel from both ends!" She might not have met Anakin's droid babies, but she'd watched more than a few for her neighbours in sixteen years. "Though we'd have to install a back flap in the nappy."

Context clue for you there, Brink.

"Oh, that's okay," Bucky insisted. "It's not a live animal -- it's Satchel."

Sure, Satchel was a) an animal, and b) alive, but Bucky liked to think of him more as a useful and highly durable toy.

This would go well.
