Industrial Arts, Tuesday

"Sorry for missing out last week," Kaidan said. The Danger Shop had been set up the same way it had the last few times around, but now there were cans and brushes sitting everywhere. "Hopefully you got a chance to keep working on your project last week anyway. And as a result, I'm extending the partnering deadline - you have until the end of the class to come to me and declare a partner. Anyone who hasn't got one is going to get one assigned next week."

There. That ought to do it.

"Anyway, you should be getting somewhere with your woodworking project," he continued, "And since this is our last week doing that, I figured it was time to talk about finishes. Basically, you're not done when everything's in the right place and the right shape, you've got to make it look - and keep - the part. If you don't, you might not just wind up with an ugly project, but it's also going to wear and tear a lot easier."

"First part of the process is sanding," he continued. "You can do it by hand or by using tools, though this class, we're just going to do it by hand. Sanding means smoothing over the wood, making sure it looks good and won't give you splinters. Once you're done sanding, you can get to the finish. They come in a lot of different styles and colors. I've provided some here, so you can go wild."

... Well, for some value of the term 'go wild'.

"Here's some tips on doing the finishing right," he said, walking past handing out some leaflets. "It's important to pick the right finish. Depending on what you pick, you're going to make your project water-resistant, wear-resistant, chemical-resistant. You can influence the electrical conductivity and the surface friction. Think hard about what you're gonna do before you tackle it."

He stopped at the front of the class. "Get to work," he said, "Next week you can show off."

It was only now occurring to Cade that a partner would be a good thing to have. "Huh."

Helpful, Cade.

Rapunzel was looking around the room trying to identify people who had partners. Sometimes it was easy to tell that people had paired up. Sometimes... not so much. Cade was getting a second, or maybe third, long look as she tried to figure out if she should run over and ask him.

"Need something, pateesa?" Cade drawled.

"Um...?"

Rapunzel frowned for a moment, then took a deep breath and decided to just go for it.

"Do you, um, already have a partner?"

Cade shook his head. "Not yet. Go figure. I'm so friendly."

Cade wasn't remotely friendly.

Rapunzel looked super-relieved for just a moment, then caught herself.

"Um, I don't either. Would you like to be partners, then?"

Pleasesayyes!

"Sure," Cade said. "How are you with robotics?"

"Um... not very good at all, I'm afraid," Rapunzel answered, hands twisting nervously in front of her.

"What about you?"

Cade grinned. "Above average, pateesa, so don't worry about it."

"Oh," Rapunzel's usual grin fell easily into place. "That's a relief."

"Um... what's a pateesa?"

"Slang for sweetie," Cade said with a little grin. "I couldn't remember your name. I'm Cade."

"Oh." Cheeks coloring ever so slightly, Rapunzel's grin widened. "I'm Rapunzel."

She stuck out her hand, the movement abrupt, as if she'd just thought about it. "It's nice to meet you!" You know, officially.

"You too," Cade replied. "You have a lot of hair."

Because no one had ever noticed that before!

:I do!" Rapunzel giggled.

"And you have, um... Lots of muscles?"

Good job, Rapunzel.

"Thanks," Cade said. "I also have a lot of earrings when I'm not in this class."

"Really?" That was neat! "Did they hurt to get?" Rapunzel's own ears were unpierced.

"Only for a second, and with my friends, you didn't really let them know," Cade replied.

Since his friends were pirates.

"Oh, well, that doesn't sound so bad."

She grinned again, most of the shyness gone from her expression. "Thank you for agreeing to be my partner!" In case she didn't mention it earlier.

"No problem," Cade said.

Working with a pretty girl was never a hardship.

"I've got a good feeling about this," she decided, bouncing slightly in excitement.
