Well. As it turned out, traveling across the country with a seven-foot dinosaur in tow was an experience very similar to hell on earth. Not only had Gert been checked by TSA agents roughly forty times throughout the journey, not to mention flight attendants on the plane itself, and not only had she incurred all kinds of additional pet fees (paid for by Captain America and whoever was paying him, but still), but she also had a seriously antsy ~~velociraptor~~ deionychus to deal with. Between that and the expected grouchiness from having been traveling all day, by the time Gert reached the Portalocity lounge in the airport where she was supposed to wait for the Fandom High shuttle, she was not in the best of moods.

The one good thing was that she at least didn't have very much luggage. She stuffed her single backpack under a chair and then flopped down in it, patting the seat beside her for Old Lace to follow suit. Now she just had to hope that whoever was driving this bus showed up punctually, because she was rapidly getting tired of this airport and was about ready to take a nap.

Anakin swooped in, swirly cape swirling behind him, and fixed the young delinquents (or potential delinquents--Anakin would wait at least 30 seconds to judge you) with a stare.

"Fandom High this way please," he said. "No one gets carsick, right?"

Maddie still wasn't sure she was doing the right thing, but she'd made it this far, right? Might as well see what happened next. She found a seat a little away from people, wishing she'd brought something to kill the time, and watching the dinosaur.

Here was the problem with having a friend whose power was turning into a dinosaur: it took you a second to do a double take when you saw one in an airport. Oh-kay...

Delinquent here, potential supervillain, thank you.

Maddie shook her head out of habit, and asked, "...Is that a cape?" because she hadn't really been expecting those once she left all the superheroes behind.

Gosh, thirty whole seconds! Very generous, Anakin. Gert might not wait that long.

Case in point: the cape.

"You're the bus driver?" Actually, Gert, he was the dean!

Bay texted as she walked from the gate where her flight from Kansas City had deposited her to the Portalocity terminal. Yeah, she knew, texting and walking was going to make her crash into somebody and give her a concussion or at least a latte all over her new sweater. But Emmett had texted her four times during her flight -- twice to send photos he'd taken, twice to ask how sure she was about the whole boarding school concept. And even if she still wasn't getting back together with the cheater, she couldn't just not answer.

boarding school is totally the right choice for maladjusted- she typed, then glanced over at the girl with purple hair and, more importantly, at the giant freaking dinosaur sitting next to her. (Okay, not so giant, but the number of live dinosaurs Bay had seen before was exactly zero, so this one seemed plenty big enough.)

She turned her phone off and stowed it in her pocket. Chats with certain overanxious friends could wait.

"Okay, did somebody spike my drink on the plane or is there a freaking dinosaur over there?"

There was no point in denying it.

"I prefer cloak."

"I'm the dean," Anakin said, "who also likes driving a bus."

Really, really fast. He wasn't kidding about the carsickness thing.

"Oh." It was totally a cape. "Nice cloak," she said, managing a little smile.

Hopefully Maddie wasn't used to seeing her dinosaur friend get petted by a random purple-haired girl she'd never met, or things would get really weird.

Bored and disgruntled as she was, Gert nodded at the new girl. "Fandom High?"

"There's a giant freaking dinosaur," Maddie confirmed, confused but still way calmer about that than she probably should be.

"Thank you," he replied. "Do you have all of your things? I'm not turning around if you've left anything behind."

Someone might have had this argument with his daughter Juliet on the car trip to and from Connecticut over the holidays.

Bay stood there for a moment, nodded slowly, then broke out in a grin.

"This may just be the coolest thing ever," she decided. "I mean, completely insane, sure, but -- a dinosaur. I'm down with that until it starts trying to eat me."

"No," Bay said, side-eyeing him. "Why are you looking at us like we already did something wrong?"

She was maybe a little defensive.

Gert's resulting expression was somewhat long-suffering, as though this happened to her all the time. Weirdly, it actually didn't.

"Her name's Old Lace," she said. "She's a velociraptor."

Nope!

It was always encouraging to speak to someone new and not get told something like 'I wasn't talking to you.'

"Considering it made it past security, I'm thinking it might be safe," Maddie told her. "...I wonder if it went through the body scan."

That got an eyebrow-raise out of Gert. "Who likes driving a bus?"

Just curious.

"I just brought this," she said, shifting her bag on her shoulder and pausing like she was waiting for confirmation that that was the right answer.

"Yeah. You, too?" she asked. "I mean... both of you?"

And then she hoped that this wasn't like an Humberto situation and that she wasn't being rude by not talking directly to the dinosaur.

You try to work out social etiquette on this.

Anakin looked vaguely approving (for Anakin, so...kind of hard to tell unless you knew him). "Good," he said. "You know what a bus is, right?"

"How come you get to have a pet velociraptor?" Bay wanted to know. "I mean, it's cool and all, but I thought they were kind of ... extinct."

Was this something her parents had lied about?

Because for some odd reason the Americans were hesitant to let John rent a car - what with him not having an American license or some such shit - he was just going to take the 'campus shuttle' rather than hire some Yank taxi driver.

And so he was going to ignore the large amounts of teenagers and 'no smoking' signs and light up. What did American airports have against a little smoke?

"I wonder if it tried to bite any TSA guys," Bay said, in a tone of morbid fascination. "I hope so. They took my shampoo."

She turned her gaze to the redhead as she spoke. The other girl seemed normal enough, so far. That was somewhat encouraging.
