How To Not Do Things, Thursday, Period One

April was still normal ~~at least until a be50'sed post went up so she could get contaminated~~, which meant business as usual in class today. Which meant basically there was nothing going on.

Well, almost nothing, because there was a pile of board games in the middle of the room and pillows all over the floor instead of desks or chairs.

April just shrugged. "Week before finals."

So... have fun, kids.

Juliet found a game of Life and started setting it up.

Well, mostly she was fitting the little pegs into the cars and playing with the spinner. But she'd play if someone else wanted to!

Jeremy took a seat next to her. "Hey, sis. Can I play?"

Even though he was all black and white, and actually wearing glasses for once. And just generally looking like a fifties nerd.

That ... was a new look, yes. And one Juliet was almost certain he wasn't stealing from some random hipster fashion blog.

"Sure, but did you know you're sort of monochrome?" she observed warily. "Also, I like your regular glasses much better."

Jeremy pushed his glasses up his nose, even though they were already perfectly in place. "But these are my regular glasses," he said. "Aren't they good? I thought they're pretty neat."

He wasn't touching the monochrome thing. It was normal!

Juliet shook her head. "Those are what some hipster in Park Slope would wear and think they looked cool, like, five years ago," she informed him.

Jeremy looked slightly unsure of himself. "Really?"

He didn't understand like half of what she'd said, mind.

"Yes." And now Juliet looked genuinely concerned. "Are you feeling okay? You sound weird."

"I'm fine," he said. Just concerned about his glasses, now. Also fidgeting with them. "Peachy keen."

"Wet?" Juliet asked, mostly to see what he'd say. This was looking a lot like random island crazy to her, and the best thing to do with that was to smile and nod.

"... What?" Sorry, Juliet. He looked around, and down at his suit. "What's wet? Did I spill something on myself? I don't remember drinking anything."

Oh, Jeremy. Poor, poor, monochrome Jeremy. Juliet reached over to solemnly pat him on the head.

"You got brainwashed," she said slowly. "It's okay. You'll get better. You didn't spill anything, it's just -- an expression."

Jeremy ignored that first bit, because it didn't make any sense. "Is it? I haven't heard it before, is it new?"

Just how out of the loop was he?

"Somebody I know made it up," Juliet said vaguely, because the alternative made her sad. "It means ... cool. Neat. Awesome. You know, good."

She nudged the board toward him. "Anyhow, what color car do you want?"

"Is there a grey one?" Jeremy asked, though with a smile. A little bit of monochrome humor, there. He reached for the blue one. "Blue for boys."

Juliet flashed a fast smile as she claimed her car. "Pink for girls. So retro."

This wasn't necessarily a bad thing. She liked pink anyhow.

"You're grey," April informed Jeremy.

She was helpful like that.

"Um, I'm... sorry?"

Was he confused by what she'd said, or just apologizing for his greyness? Who could tell!

"Grey," April repeated. She didn't hate the look, mind, and actually thought it looked pretty cool, but around here she was pretty sure it was not a good situation. "How come?"

Jeremy hesitated before replying. "I just am?"

He might even manage a sentence without a question mark in it in a moment!

"Did you bathe in anything weird?" she wanted to know. That was totally an okay question for a teacher to ask a student. For sure. "Touch any creepy glowy things?"

"No?"

Dammit.

He fixed his glasses. "I'm fine. Thank you for asking, though, Miss."

"Yeah, whatever."

She didn't really know Jeremy well enough to identify that there was something off about him here, so April was just going to leave it at that.

And side-eye him slightly on her way back to her desk, obviously.

"No. No one can play!"

Bucky trotted over, batted one of the cars around viciously, and then sat down in the middle of the board.

...Because, cat.

Jeremy stared at him. "That's –– that's a little rude."

Yeah, because that was going to be enough to make Bucky move, sure.

"And whose fault is it for paying attention to something that isn't me?" Bucky demanded, jabbing an accusatory claw in Jeremy's direction. "Yeah, I thought so." He shifted to sit on a different spot on the board, frowned, and then tried lying down instead. "This board is all lumpy and uncomfortable," he complained. "You should fix that."

"It's not really an, um, cat bed," Jeremy tried, hesitating. "Maybe you should think about moving somewhere else, kitty?"

"Of course it's not a cat bed," Bucky countered. "It's a board game. What are you, some kind of moron?"

...Said the guy who hadn't yet realized that Jeremy was the wrong color today.

"Now, go ahead and declare me winner of the game, and we can start to negotiate."

Even Jeremy-in-color would probably have been too taken aback to argue. The black-and-white version definitely was.

"Okay, you're the winner," he said, quickly. "You win."

"That's right," Bucky agreed. "I always win!" He grabbed a stack of what he thought was play money from the box and clutched it greedily. "Now, I'm taking all of your... promissory notes. Don't try to stop me!"

Jeremy held both his hands up. Hey, angry cats could scratch you!

"I'm not stopping you!"

"No, but you're not NOT trying to stop me. Don't give me that look!"

Board games. Boring to play, but so, so much fun to mess up for other people.

Bucky curled up on a pillow and eyed the games warily, waiting for his moment to strike.
