Tactics of War [Monday Evening]

Irritated to leave her prisoner behind, Eighth certainly looks distracted as she walks into class late. After passing the sign in sheet around, she eyes them all carefully.

"Surprise, sweethearts. Pop Quiz." And she passes it out with a small, secret smile.

You've captured the child of a warlord from a distant galaxy and have learned all about his world, his technology and his military forces – albeit from a child's perspective. You, of course, have a superior fighting force and you are great need of the superior technology of this distant galaxy. This particular far-off civilization has previously been ravaged by a similar army to your own and should be somewhat prepared. However, that previous invading force COULD see your army as invading their territory and that you are attacking their personal enemies and would be affronted and therefore attack you back. (A) Should you attack? (B) Should you collect more information?

"After you finish your pop quiz, please read the following document. Being able to openly state your intentions and deceiving the other party is a skill for every tactician, as well as being able to tell little white lies that cover up exactly what you are up to.

Pair up and roleplay, as it where, a little disinformation yourself. Try to find out your partner's Valentine's Day plans while spinning your own tale of deception.

Oh -- I'm afraid I will need to speak to you again, Mr. Mitchell. See me after class for real this time."

"It's a good idea, but it can be rather depressing being surrounded by cupids and hearts and pink when you don't have anyone special." Mmm, pink. Pink meant Tonks. Dreamy smile would reveal things. So don't. I mean it, Ivanova.

"Then avoid the cupids and the hearts and the pink and so on if you don't have someone special or someone special isn't available. There's the fine tradition of celebrating "Single's Night" with a bunch of bad movies from the video rental place."

"What would you suggest for such a movie night?" she asked. "Rom-com or slasher? Or a shoot-em-up?"

"Me? Well, if you wanted to go for the holiday theme, I'd say romantic comedy but I doubt people want to be reminded that they're single. I'd say shoot 'em up. Something big and blockbuster-y."

Hmmm. Ivanova hesitated. She didn't think he had any idea of her plans. But she didn't have any idea about his, either. Time for a topic change. "Of course, such a movie night would seem to be rather impromptu. Not a big, complicated plan."

"It would," Pip said. "But it's just a hypothetical. Though I suppose you could plan a movie night, if you were so inclined. Maybe cook some for it, make it an event."

"Cooking would be good," Ivanova grinned. "I make a mean stroganoff." Lies, all lies. "Do you think many people would come to this entirely hypothetical movie night? Seems you can't turn around in this school without bumping up against a snuggly couple."

Where she was going with this? She had no idea.

Mmmm, Tonks . . .

Pip had possibly even less of an idea as to where this was going than Ivanova did. "No idea. I guess it all depends on who's single. Maybe enough people could come off that everyone without a date could pair off and we could all go on dates."

A ha. It appears that he didn't have a date.

Maybe.

This was hard.

"Draw lots?" She grinned. "Or straws? But that would be fun. It would at least give people bad date stories to tell on future dates."

"Well, there's an idea," Pip said. "Run a sort of date-a-thon for all the single people in the school on Valentine's day. Though that might be pretty depressing for some people. Has the potential to make what was previous a lonely night into a hell date."

"Now there's a great theme for a Valentine's dance - The Worst Night of Your Life," Ivanova replied. The idea had some merit, and she would have participated fully in such an experiment. If not for Tonks.

Oh god. No, don't smile.

She smiled, a little sappy smirk.
