Oppression, Resistance & Revolution: Friday

"Revolution," Magneto began solemnly. "The word has lost all meaning. Lost in a world of marketing and media. Today you are more likely to hear the term used when selling shoes or a mobile phone rather than world events. A pity."

Magneto began to circuit the room. "There are several types of revolution. Political. Cultural. Societial and technical. You'd be mistaken to think that a revolution is simply rapid change of government. That is more of a revolt. For our purposes a revolution is a fundmental change in power, culture or society. Most revolutions are violent though some... very rarely, have been peaceful. Keep in mind when these changes occur there is an external factor involved. Never confuse a coup with a revolution. A coup happens from the top down. A revolution occurs from outside the cultural or political power currently in place."

"We've already discussed some of the factors that could lead to a revolution," Magneto continued as he returned to the front of the classroom. "Today I would like you all to take a moment to discuss a revolution that has taken place in your world or timeline and the lasting effect it might have had on you or your family."

And with that he randomly pointed at a student. "You first."

"About thirteen years ago--" Karla'd had to pause and figure out how many years had gone by with the time difference between Kaeleer and Fandom and had it really been that long?! "--the brother-in-law of the ruling Queen staged a quiet coup. He'd engineered an accident that killed the Queen, her Consort, the Queen's sister who was the Territory's strongest Black Widow, and her husband as well. He then took advantage of the Territory's shock and grief, coming forward with papers that named him the guardian of the Queen's only child and rigging the election so that his own hand-picked puppet became Territory Queen. He worked within the framework of our laws, so other than the Queen and her family, no blood was shed. But now there is a 'Ruling Council,' made up of his cronies and allies and it is they who make the laws that his Queen passes. In the past decade, much has changed for the worse. Glacia is splintering, torn between those who are loyal to the old ways, those who are loyal to the current regime and those who are too afraid for their lives and loved ones to speak out."
