Ethics [Tuesday, First Period]

Korra was at the front of the classroom this morning, and she did not look at all nervous about that. As everyone arrived she handed them a coloured token and directed them to sit with everyone else with the same colour.

"Okay, everyone, Master Skywalker isn't here this morning but you've got me, so let's do this," she started. "Today's we're going to be talking about the ethics of face-punching! Uh, I mean ethics and violence." Clearly this was off to a great start.

"I mean there are some people who think it's never okay to use violence, even if someone is attacking you, and there are others who believe you should only use violence as a last resort and avoid killing if possible, like the Yellows over here. But you've also got those who might be more inclined towards that whole 'the best defence is a good offence' thing, like the Reds, then there's the Greens who kind of fall between the two, going for a strong defence but who can still kick a...take a more forceful approach if pushed. Finally you've got Blues, who just kind of go with the flow, not picking fights for no reason but not avoiding them either."

"So whose approach is the more ethical one? Say you're all members of whichever colour you got, how would you justify your group approach as the most ethical?"

Korra paused a moment before continuing. "But what if the leader of the Reds decided that the best way to protect themselves from a member of the Yellows who might pose a threat to something they were planning was to wipe out the Yellows completely? Then to go after the Blues and Greens in case they might be too? Or some of the Greens decided they all needed to stay behind their defences and pretend nothing was wrong. Maybe that one Yellow survived and could stop all this by going against their beliefs and killing the leader of the Reds, should they? What should the Blues be doing during all this?"

"I don't know that violence can really be described in ethical terms," Alec said. "It's situational. If there's a threat to yourself or someone else, then fighting it is the right thing to do, but having some kind of unalterable philosophy that doesn't vary by context isn't the way to get things done."

That said, he was totally a green.

Yellow.

If Atton wasn't so hungover (and half-asleep at his desk) he might have something to say about that. (Or not. It wasn't exactly an inauspicious topic.)

But nope. He was just going to drop his head on the desk and maybe hum a few bars from 'No Leaf Clover' under his breath. Stupid earworm.

If Anakin were teaching the class, Sia would never do this, but with a student there... She slipped a note onto his desk.

That cannot be comfortable.

Gold star.

Really, she was lucky he could even be bothered to lift his head to write that.

She appreciated the effort!

Are you all right?

And returned effort with concern.

Just had a late night. Know how it goes.

Isolated incident, nothing to do with the weekend. Honest.

"Red wins," Bucky answered. He chucked his yellow token at Korra. "I'm switching, because I don't belong with hippy pansies."
