Attention:

Today we're going to do a class exercise.

One of the most important lessons you'll learn is how to grab an audience's attention. Your employers, for the most part, will be interested in circulation numbers as opposed to thought-provoking articles and, at some point, I'll teach you how to do that.

For now, however, we'll concentrate on attention grabbing.

Journalism Students: Give me two pictures and a headline to go with them. The desired effect is to make me interested/curious enough to actually want to read whatever story is attached.

Photo-journalism students: Three pictures and no headline with the same objective as above.

Place your completed assigments on my desk.

Extra-credit will be rewarded if your assignment provokes a response from your classmates, either positive or negative.

Local professor's cat center of eugenics controversy

A cat belonging to local journalism professor Spider Jerusalem is the newest animal to be spotlighted by the People for Removal of In-geneered Creatures and Kerotype Sterilization (PRICKS). The group claims to have found pictures and documentation of Mr. Jerusalem's cat, documents which indicate the animal was a deliberately In-geneered animal and not a normal conjoined birth. When questioned about the authenticity of the documentation, the cat merely sprayed a liquid stream of defecation across the pages, a sentiment this journalist heartily seconds.
