Oppression, Resistance and Revolution: Friday

Today the blackboard had a new word written on it. In nice big bold letters:

RESISTANCE

Magneto sat at the desk quietly as the students marched in. As soon as the bell rang he stood up and began to expound his lecture.

"We've covered topics of oppression. We've discussed what motivates us in those situations. Today we shall talk of resistance and what means are available to fight various types of oppression. A resistance is defined as a group or collection of individual groups who are dedicated to opposing a governing force. It may be an invader in an occupied country. It may be a policy enforced by a body of government. It may be a cultural norm enforced by the majority of a narrow minded society. For our purposes today we shall talk about non-violent resistance or civil resistance."

By this time Magneto had circled the room and was now standing in front of the classroom, looking down at them with a baleful look.

"This type of resistance attempts to achieve it's goals via symbolic protests, economic or political noncooperation or civil disobedience," he continued. "In some cases it was successful. The civil rights movements in the United States were famous for such resistance. Those involved used picketing, vigils, leafletting, community education and information warfare in an effort to raise the consciousness around them in an effort to make social change. This method however can only work in a society that allows free speech. For the most part."

"Your assignment today is to write a 100 word essay on an example of how one of these resistant options can be used in the place of a problem in your own life or world. Begin."

Somehow, Billy managed to squeeze what he could say about the gay rights movement into 100 words. Okay, so maybe Stonewall didn't exactly fit into the "non-violent" part, but there were plenty of other demonstrations that did.

Evan wrote his essay about the Jean Grey School, about how while students were being offered training with their powers, it wasn't so that they could be better soldiers once they graduated. Headmaster Logan had been very adamant on that.

They were resisting simply by existing, in a way. While the world continued to say no to mutants, there they were, the last few remaining, living their lives mutant and proud.

...Non-violent. Riiiiiiiight...

Ooooh, wait!

Ace's commentary on passive resistance through driving your oppressors barmy was liberally cribbed from every moment she'd ever spent in Yakko Warner's company.

Finally, when in doubt, sing that Disney song at them. You know which one. THAT one. If you can get robot dolls to sing it? Even better.

Korra wrote about the time Sokka invented a pentapox outbreak to sneak everyone out of Omashu way back during the Hundred Year War.

Which just made her think about Katara telling her about it..and about Tenzin... and Lin and Mako and Bolin and Asami and everyone else from home and the fact she wouldn't be getting any guests this weekend.

There is no non-violent way to protest anything where I am from, Surreal wrote. We have no law against what your people call murder. If you protest and are not willing to defend yourself, you die.

James wrote about the ability to petition the king and address grievances to the court as a way to enact change. This method worked a lot better with the current ruler than with, say, Mad King Rodric.

Billy was here and not having any disobedient thoughts, thank you very much. He was too busy thinking about how apparently, no one was coming to visit him for Parents Weekend. It kind of sucked a lot, he had to admit.
