Drama! Thursday, Period Four

The drama room was set up as usual, with the students expected to sit in a circle. In the middle of the circle were several berets and black-and-white striped shirts of various sizes (including, of course an Arietty-sized set).

"Drama is essentially communication!" Thor boomed. "The author of a play is communicating to the audience, and the characters are communicating to each other. Sometimes, this communication is rather direct and verbal. Other times, communication occurs through physical actions and gestures. Sometimes, it is a combination of both, which can make it especially complex when a person's words do not match the language of their body." Not that he knew anyone who was prone to that, Loki. "Today I thought we would work on non-verbal communication. To help set the mood for the class, I have provided the traditional costume for a form of Midgardian performance called 'mime'. I want you to find a partner, and one of you shall decide on a problem. Without words, I would like you to attempt to communicate your problem to your partner. Once the second partner thinks they have figured out the problem, they should suggest a solution. Again, without using words. See if you can communicate effectively through gestures and other movement. Then, switch roles and the second partner shall come up with a dilemma that the first partner must solve."

Once everyone had a chance to try out the activity, Thor gestured for them all to sit down again.

"I have been thinking about our final performance," he informed them. "And I think it would work best if everyone came up with a short dramatic performance piece they would like to do on their own or in a small group of two or three, and then we shall also do a performance as a group. So, although I know many of you will be busy this weekend with your guests, please start thinking about what you would like to do!"

George, little fashionista that he was, was eying the outfits they'd been supplied with a look of distaste. Could he not mime in what he was already wearing? That was possible, right?

The hat on the other hand, he could go for.

Arietty, on the other hand, was pretty excited about the outfits. NEW CLOTHES SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO BORROW OR MAKE HERSELF. She put it on, adjusted her hat to a jaunty angle, then went up to the nearest unpartnered person and waved her arms in the air.

"Hi!" she called. "Do you want to work together?"

Juliet considered the shirt with pursed lips, but finally pulled it on and added the hat. It was a costume, and she could be flexible about those even if mime wasn't really her thing.

She thought about which problem to act out as she waited for a partner.

Rilla wasn't sure horizontal stripes were very flattering, but no talking meant no lisping, so she was pleased with that part.

She glanced around (silently, of course) for a partner okay with SP as omg getting late.
