Drama! Thursday, Period Four
The drama room was set up as usual, with the students expected to sit in a circle. In the middle of the circle were several berets and black-and-white striped shirts of various sizes (including, of course an Arietty-sized set).
"Drama is essentially communication!" Thor boomed. "The author of a play is communicating to the audience, and the characters are communicating to each other. Sometimes, this communication is rather direct and verbal. Other times, communication occurs through physical actions and gestures. Sometimes, it is a combination of both, which can make it especially complex when a person's words do not match the language of their body." Not that he knew anyone who was prone to that, Loki. "Today I thought we would work on non-verbal communication. To help set the mood for the class, I have provided the traditional costume for a form of Midgardian performance called 'mime'. I want you to find a partner, and one of you shall decide on a problem. Without words, I would like you to attempt to communicate your problem to your partner. Once the second partner thinks they have figured out the problem, they should suggest a solution. Again, without using words. See if you can communicate effectively through gestures and other movement. Then, switch roles and the second partner shall come up with a dilemma that the first partner must solve."
Once everyone had a chance to try out the activity, Thor gestured for them all to sit down again.
"I have been thinking about our final performance," he informed them. "And I think it would work best if everyone came up with a short dramatic performance piece they would like to do on their own or in a small group of two or three, and then we shall also do a performance as a group. So, although I know many of you will be busy this weekend with your guests, please start thinking about what you would like to do!"
