Oppression, Resistance & Revolution: Friday
Today the class met in the Danger Room. When they entered they would see Magneto standing in the middle of what appeared to be a lush green suburban street.
“Last week we talked about a cause you would die for,” Magneto began as he motioned. “Some of you were able to find excellent examples drawing from your own life. Some of you had some difficulty thinking of a cause. That is why we are here today.”
“This is Genosha,” he said spreading his arms to indicate the surroundings. “Or at least as reasonable a facsimile I could produce with this technology. It is small island nation located north of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa. At this period of time it was an idyllic society. Virtually a utopia. It had a high standard of living, an excellent economy, and freedom from the political and racial turmoil that characterized neighboring nations. And for a good reason.”
Magneto stopped and pointed to a group of people in skin tight suits. Their hair was shaved off of their heads, with numbers tattooed on their foreheads. “Those are mutants. Or mutates as they were initially called here. Genosha’s economic prosperity was based on their abilities and.. slavery. Any child found with a mutant gene was taken from their families and brainwashed. Their abilities were modifed and they were bonded into skin-tight suits with numerical markers for identification. Their purpose? To fulfill specific labor shortages.”
He turned to his students. “Hopefully you find such use of people distasteful,” Magneto continued. “This practice continued for quite some time until a group known as the X-men liberated the country. For a time the human government attempted to reverse the atrocities performed here. That is until the UN ceded government authority to a mutant.”
That would be the mutant lecturing the class. Who might be editing certain events as he saw fit.
“The change of government started a civil war, with the remaining humans hell bent at saving the status quo,” Magneto continued (and leaving out certain aspects of Genoshan history). “Eventually, they were removed from power. Genosha prospered once again, this time without slavery or persecution of mutants. It became an advanced society with a population of over sixteen million.”
“Unfortunately,” he said with a dramatic pause, “That idyllic society was short-lived.”
Magneto snapped his fingers and the lush green world was turned to rubble. “The island was attacked by Sentinels,” he continued. “In my world they are robots built for one specific purpose: to hunt and kill mutants. Which they did quite well as you can see.”
He turned again and began to walk down the dilapidated street. “Millions were killed. Few survived. Attempts were made to rebuild the island. They failed. Now it is an empty land and a reminder of what oppression can do to a society.”
Magneto sighed dramatically. “No assignment today. Merely think upon what you saw here today. We will meet here again next week. Class dismissed.”
[OOC: Please note that underneath the cut is a lot of information regarding mutant slavery and mistreatment. Granted it is all fictional but I want that up as an FYI
Additionally, Magneto's lecture on the events is HEAVILY misrepresented because of his own POV. I'll mention those facts in the OOC thread if your character would be aware of them.]

Lecture
Re: Lecture
There was a definite pained look on her face when she saw what had later been done to the land and to the people.
"Mother Night."
Re: Lecture
Sometimes his world sucked. He kicked at a bit of rubble and tried not to feel cold.
Re: Lecture
She did shoot him a hard glare for what she suspected was blatant emotional manipulation, but she kept her mouth closed. Regardless of his motives, the millions of innocent victims weighed heavily even here, in this simulation.
Re: Lecture
Millions, members of a race that now numbered so few, they might as well be extinct.
He didn't say anything. He simply stood there, brows furrowed, hands balled into fists, shaking in quiet rage.

Post Lecture
Re: Post Lecture
He took a seat, enjoying what was to him a free period.
Re: Post Lecture
"Not exactly a vacation photo," he noted to the wee-godling.

And the next day, they'd discovered a horrifying secret lair of the Church of Humanity. Jono's world had all the fun!
"I know enough to recognize you were eliding over a few key facts."

He looked torn, somewhere between being sick and wanting to lash out at something, and after spending a few more minutes just quietly shaking in impotent rage, he found a quiet street corner and took a seat there, taking a few deep breaths and trying to calm down.
Re: Post Lecture
"You're angry," he stated. "Good. You should be angry."

Talk with the TA
Re: Talk with the TA
Talk with Magneto
OOC:
1. The destruction of Genosha by sentinels was actually caused by Charles Xavier's "Evil Twin Sister" who was born without a body. Or something. (Grant Morrison can be weird)
So really it wasn't human oppression that killed off Genosha but Magneto sees that as a tiny detail.
2. Magneto took over the political government of Genosha after threatening world destruction. The UN caved and gave him Genosha. Magneto then pretty much attacked the remaining militant humans still leaving on the island and drove them out.
So. Yeah. Just a touch of revisionism there, right?
Feel free to call it out if your character would be familiar with such details. Magneto may not be thrilled by it but will acknowledge such facts to a point.
Also I promise next week's class will not be so mutant power oriented.
