Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

Jackson got to the gym early. He took his mission of establishing a sports team in Fandom pretty seriously, see. That involved making something of an effort, and showing up early to check out the competition (yes, he viewed the other clubs as competition, deal with it) was the least he could do.

He grabbed a copy of the club schedule for himself before he went to set up his table.

Liara paused, thought about that for a minute, and said, "...That is unusual, is it not? I have never heard anyone complain about a lack of money."

Then again, she hadn't been here spring semester.

Neither had Victor, so.

"Pretty unusual, yeah," he agreed. "I dunno, maybe all boarding schools are like this. More ... supplies, than at the public kind."

He wasn't sure her planet would have the distinction, but he figured she'd ask if she didn't get it.

Liara rubbed the back of her head. "I do not remember paying tuition," she said carefully.

"And there's nobody to pay it for me," Victor sighed. "...okay, when I start thinking about that I worry. Nothing's free, right? Unless I'm paying in being a girl and whatever, which -- the universe has a weird sense of humor."

Liara nodded thoughtfully. "Well, I suppose it does not matter so much," she said finally. "Perhaps there are some wealthy people involved in the daily running of the island."

"Or we're in a parallel universe where the school can pay its bills in dust bunnies," Victor said. "I'd like to know, but you're right. Until it starts affecting us it's probably not important."

Liara nodded again, rubbing at her arms. "I suppose we should come up with some kind of lesson plan," she segued. "Perhaps you can print hand-outs the week after our first attempt?"

"I can do that," Victor nodded, going with the segue. "First week is usually just getting to know you stuff anyhow, right?"

"I assume there will be introductions," Liara said. "It seems to be what the teachers here prefer. I am... not sure how it helps the work, but..."

"I think they just like knowing where we're coming from," Victor hazarded. "You'd rather just get going?"

He did not really have a strong opinion either way.

Liara shrugged helplessly. "I do not know," she admitted. "I have never run a club before."

"I think as long as we get to do something cool and nobody gets hurt, we'll all be happy?" Victor offered. "Besides. You have Topher and Evan to help. And, um" -- he glanced to the information sheets --- "... GLaDOS is advising this?"

He sounded as though he was not entirely confident in the gym teacher's abilities.

"Yes," Liara said. "I was... dubious about that myself."

"Like, it's not even that what she does in gym class is that weird?" Victor said, scratching along his jaw. "It's just fancy running and jumping. But the way she talks bugs me. Like she kind of hopes this is the week somebody's going to die."

"Whoever programmed her must have had a human sense of humor," Liara opined. "I have never heard a VI sound that cruel."

"I have, but he was on a kill-everybody, take-over-the-world, kind of trip," Victor said, thinking of Ultron. "And he wasn't supposed to be that way, anyhow. If she was programmed on purpose, she's special."

"You think she gained sentience?"

There was mild caution in Liara's voice, but no more than that. The geth had disappeared well before her time; she knew the warnings only intellectually.

Victor hesitated before answering. "I haven't seen enough to tell me either way," he said. "If she did, she's a sadist or close to it. If she didn't, whoever programmed her has -- what you said, a weird sense of humor."

He was aware this would probably be a reasonable time to say you know I'm technically an AI, right?, but somehow the context struck him as ... not the best.

"If she's sentient, being trapped without a body would have to make her nuts."

"Perhaps," Liara said dubiously. "If she was programmed to think from within the confines of a body. Not that I am at all an expert on artificial intelligences - not in the least because they are illegal."

"Yeah, funny story about that," Victor said on the general subject of AIs, half under his breath. "If she's sentient, she has to know what she's missing. Maybe she makes up for it by having a lot of information uploaded, but ... I dunno. I think you'd feel left out, not being able to move or touch or taste anything. But it's not like I've talked to her about it."

"I suppose we will have to see how she handles the club before we make any judgments," Liara said, glancing towards where Evan was running around. "But we will have to be careful."
