How to Start a Business, Monday, Period 3
"Okay, last week was kind of a thematic break from putting a start-up together. I hope you took a little time during that extra week to solidify your thoughts on what specifically you want to do in this class because we're going to be moving forward as if you have," Zayne explained.
"The two things you need before you can really do anything in business are an idea and funding. I don't want to say that coming up with an idea is easy, exactly, but getting funding might make it feel that way."
"So, there are a few obvious ways to fund your idea. The easiest way, of course, is to have money. Kind of goes without saying, but I'm saying it anyway. Next to that, relatives with money. As we work our way down the line, we get to the real lifeblood of industry," Zayne said. "Strangers with money to invest. This can either be banks with money to lend or people with money to invest."
"Full disclosure time. There was a time in my life, just a couple years ago, when I was a wanted criminal on the run after being framed for some highly publicized murders back in my galaxy. I proved my innocence beyond a shadow of a doubt, but to do that, I relied very heavily on an actual criminal who got stuck on the run with me," Zayne said. "And once we were cleared of my supposed crimes, we started a highly successful business finding the worst people we could - criminals on levels way above us - and stealing from them. My share of the money went directly toward helping people in need and helping to establish legitimate businesses."
"So, with my having gone through that, I want to make this as clear as I can: crime is not a good way to fund a business," Zayne said. "You don't want to know how many people tried to kill me, or about the week I spent being tortured and forced to fight people, or the loss of friendships, or the fact that I inadvertently found myself in business with one of the most horrible, evil beings I've ever even heard of. And all that was just over a period of months. So, again, start legit and stay that way. It's a significantly better life."
"That said, by the end of everything, I did have plenty of money in legitimate businesses that I've been able to use to buy property and fund other businesses myself. Which has been helpful," Zayne admitted. "If I find out any of you are doing something illegal for this class, at the very least you're getting detention and a call is being placed to the town troopers. We're definitely in do as I say, not as I did territory."
"What we're going to work toward for your businesses is getting some funding - legitimately, and not out of your own pockets. We're eliminating the easy ways for the sake of class," Zayne explained. "Outside of those two restrictions, I'm going to give you some free reign as to how you want to fund your ideas. Whether you want to check in with local business people to see if they're willing to help you out, or take pre-orders for your service, or see if you can get funding on the internet, you have a world full of options. I'm here to help you narrow down what options are best for you. And if you want some help, I'll approach potential backers with you."
"So, today I want you to figure out who you might approach and ask for an investment for your business. Just like the business idea, you don't need a fully fleshed out plan yet, but you should at least have an idea."
