"Good day, class!" Ronan said cheerily, from the start of the room; though he'd sent around a message instructing people to come to the Danger Shop, it still looked like a classroom, at least for now. "So, we've all decided we want to go somewhere -- which means we need to start to get ready to go. There are two things you'll want to think about before actually heading out: where you plan on going and what you plan on taking."
Ronan reached down behind his desk and pulled up a big backpack. "Today," he continued, "we'll be focusing on the latter. There's a lot of thing to consider -- how much space you have to store things, how much you want to spend on your bag, what you'll need for particular places that you're going. Most traditional backpacking destinations tend to be warm to hot, at least if you're going in the summer -- but if you're like me, and heading off-planet, you may not know what season it's going to be until you get there, so you may need to plan for a little warmer clothing, or make sure you have the resources to get appropriate clothing when you arrive.
"To start," Ronan said, pushing a button on his desk -- thank you, Danger Shop -- and making a pile of backpacks appear in front of him, "everyone come up and pick a backpack. These are all fifty-five to seventy-five litre packs, which should, theoretically, have enough storage space if you pack smart. From there, we'll start looking at what should be going into it. Oh, and you'll be using these packs for the rest of the class, by the way, so think about this carefully."
When everyone had one, Ronan cued the next change; around them, the Danger Shop shifted, revealing clothing racks and shelves. "Clothing is going to be the bulk of what you carry," he explained, "and is going to take up the most room in your backpack, as well, so it's where you need to pack smartest. If you're backpacking, generally speaking you don't need to worry too much about dressing up, so plan your wardrobe choices accordingly. There are some handouts with useful information; I have a few things to suggest as well. First off, pack a pair of shorts -- for the purposes of the class, we're not going to worry about 'looking like tourists,' and some of the destinations I have planned will be much more useful with shorts. What I do recommend is longer cut cargo shorts; they provide a little more protection while still being cooler than full trousers, and the extra pockets can be useful. Second, you will need a head-covering. Third, for the love of God pack deodorant."
Not that Ronan had experience with unwashed co-hostel-visitors or anything.

Why didn't they just put everything in their pockets?
Still, it was for class. Yeul supposed that maybe he did it this way so it was easier to check what everyone packed.

After throwing in a nice eggplant-purple bandanna, she assembled her toiletries, because hoofing it didn't mean she was going to be gross, thankyouverymuch. So, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant (she had no desire to smell like Eau de Gotham Lowlifes), and a little bottle of peppermint soap (http://www.drbronner.com/DBMS/OLPE02/PeppermintLiquidSoap.htm).
That ought to do it, right?

Finally, she rather hesitantly began stocking her bag with...well, accessories. A light jacket, shoes, a hat, a scarf. Things like that. Then she put the notebook and pen she'd brought to class with her and her phone (which served as her camera) in to make it look less empty. It...didn't really help that much.
