Oppression, Resistance and Revolution - Friday

“Good morning, class,” Magneto said after everyone had taken their seats. “My name is Erik Lehnsherr. For the purpose of this class you may address me as... professor.”

He smirked a little at that before continuing.

“Now, I’m sure many of you know me by a very different name. That is a topic for a different day. For those of you who might be curious, feel free to ask Mr. Starsmore who is a teacher here or Miss Pryde at the local bar. I’m sure they have some delightful tales to tell you.”

Giving his class a smirk, he began to walk up and down the rows of desks and began to lecture.

“This class is entitled Oppression, Resistance and Revolution,” he continued. “Which will entail both lecture as well as practical labs. As part of this course we will be looking at the history of oppression, resistance and revolution throughout history. We will discuss its roots and its effect on society. I realize that many of you may not be from this planet or perhaps from an alternate line of history. For the purpose of this class, I shall be drawing examples from my own world. I expect all of you to provide your own examples as you see fit. Before we begin our class exercise today, Mr. Kaplan will be the TA for the course. Mr. Kaplan? Please see me after class for instructions. If he's here.”

Coming full circle, Magneto took his place in front of the class. “Now, I understand it’s typically a tradition in this school to start class with introductions. I do not feel that is necessary. Instead I would like for you all to go around the room and tell me about a cause you feel is worth dying for.”

And then with a random point of his finger, Magneto selected his first student. “You. Begin.”

She wasn't trying to suck up, really! She hadn't figured out that Erik Lehnsherr was Magneto, whom she'd never met but had heard of.

Angelica smiled. "I love Fandom," she said. "I never thought I'd be free to be myself and not have to hide that I'm a mutant. I wish the rest of the world was like this. I don't understand why people are so mean to other people just because they're different."

"Unfortunately, history will show that those who are different tend to be maligned," Magneto said with a touch of anger in his voice. "Often times for no reason."

Of course if you're Magneto, you've given the world lots of reasons to distrust mutants. But he doesn't think of it that way. Looking at the girl he made an educated guess based on his class list. "I take it you are Angelica Jones?"

Angelica nodded. "That's me," she said. "There's a lot of oppression in my world so I thought your class would help me understand how to deal with it.

"Oh, I'm sure I can help you a lot with that topic," Magneto said with a small smile.

Which might seem more sinister if Angelica knew Erik's other identity.

"The mutant cause is one that is near and dear to my heart," he continued. "I'm sure you'll be able to gain a lot from this course."

"That's great," Angelica said eagerly, happy she'd chosen this class.

She dropped her voice a little and asked, "Are you a mutant too, Mr. Lehnsherr?" Fandom was safe, but she knew some people like Bobby still weren't out about their mutant status.

"I am a mutant," Magneto replied clearly. "And one who is very active in your timeline. Or at least I assume he is. You would probably know me better as Magneto."

Angelica looked startled, not really expecting that. "Oh, wow," she said. "I've heard of you. Back home on TV they say you're a criminal, but they say horrible things about all mutants." And Emma had never mentioned him to her one way or the other, not that she'd believe what she had to say these days.

"It's 1986 back home for me," she felt the need to add. "I hope things are a little better in the future at least, if that's where you're from."

"It's not," Magneto replied matter-of-factly. "And perhaps what you learn in this class today will help the future of your timeline before it's too late."

"I hope so," Angelica said, trying not to let her disappointment that things hadn't miraculously gotten better in a few decades show, and trying not to feel too discouraged by it as well.

"I'll do my best, I promise," she said.
