Wild Roving, Thursday [30/08]

"Good morning, everyone!" Ronan said cheerily, giving a jaunty wave to his class. "It's nice to see so many familiar faces. For those who don't know me, my name is Ronan Nolan -- you can just call me Ronan, no real need for the 'professor' thing unless you really want to -- and I am a wizard."

He paused for a moment. "... If there are any newbies here who don't believe me yet, yes, I do in fact mean the kind of wizard who does magic. Stay back after class if you want to see an example of something I can do; I promise I'm not crazy.

"So, welcome to Wild Roving," Ronan continued. "In this class, I'm going to be drawing upon some of my own experiences to teach you the skills you need if you're ever travelling on your own -- whether that's backpacking across Europe, running away from the authorities, or travelling the galaxy world-to-world.

"And, since this is the first class, we're going to go with the Fandom tradition and do introductions."

He's a wizard, Harry. Or, y'know, boggle at 'travelling the galaxy,' if you're new to Fandom.

Sparkle wished he was going to travel the galaxy. He'd make do with maybe backpacking across Canada or something. You know. If he could afford it.

... Hell, even if he couldn't.

"As I said, my name is Ronan Nolan, born and raised in Ireland, and I graduated from Fandom High three years ago. After leaving school, I ended up travelling around the galaxy for a couple of years -- one as an itinerant wizard, doing work where I could, and one as a healing apprentice in a series of clinics on different worlds.

"Now, you guys -- name, year in school, where you're from, and one place you'd like to travel after you graduate."

"My name is Liara T'Soni, and I am a freshman," Liara started. At least so far this class seemed to be what she had actually signed up for. "After I return home--" because she was returning home one way or the other, "I would like to see the Prothean archives on Kahje some day."

"What about the Prothean archives interests you?" Ronan asked. "I'm not familiar with the term." Or Kahje, but, hey, there were lots of worlds in his own universe he didn't know.

"The Protheans are our predecessors," Liara said, perking up. "Their technology is miles past what we have managed so far. And Kahje's archives have historically been limited to hanar religious use. There must still be so much that goes undiscovered!"

Ronan nodded. "A former civilisation, then?" he asked, to clarify. "By how long do they predate you?"

"At least several tens of thousands of years," Liara said.

Fifty thousand years, Liara. Well. Forty-nine nine nine and some change. "Many of our technological advances are based on Prothean finds."

"Reverse engineering?" Ronan asked, "or integrating into your own existing tech?"

"Both," Liara said. "I mean, it depends. We have yet to manage reverse-engineering a mass relay, for instance."

"And not for lack of trying, I imagine," Ronan said. "They're still usable, though, yes? Which speaks to the skill with which the Protheans could craft them, if they're still functional tens of thousands of years later."

"Exactly. It is one of the reasons why the Protheans are worthy of our admiration, and of extensive study," Liara said, nodding, "And while I respect the hanar's religious rights, of course, being able to look into their archives... well, it would be wonderful."

"Sparkle, sophomore, from Toronto, Canada, and... I dunno, after I graduate I've kinda got it all set out in the wide open for me, you know?" He tilted his head. "Backpack across Canada. Europe, if I can get to it. I dunno."

He'd clearly given this a whole lot of thought.

"Somewhere. Just so long as I'm doing something. And not, like, being arrested for it."

Ronan laughed a little at that. "Sometimes not being arrested is the most difficult part of it. There will definitely be a class on interacting with law enforcement."

"Be sure to tell the class not to spit in their faces or flip them the bird," Sparkle offered, helpfully. "They hate that."

Speaking from experience?

... Probably.

Ronan laughed a little at that -- couldn't help it. "We'll be covering that, yeah, and a little on interacting with law enforcement when you don't speak the local language."

Not that he'd ever had to deal with that personally -- thank you, Speech -- but he'd heard it could be difficult.

"Same rules apply," Sparkle decided, smirking. "No spitting. No matter how tempting it is."

... Sparkle.

Well, at least this class didn't sound like it would be unpleasant in the least! Yeul was smiling in relief.

"I am Paddra Nsu-Yeul," she said, using her full name only because it was a class. "Yeul is my first name. I am a Freshman, from the planet of Gran Pulse, and..."

That was a hard question, that last one. Where hadn't see been at home?

"I would like to explore the ruins of Cocoon," Yeul settled on finally.

"It's nice to meet you, Yeul," Ronan said, offering her a smile in return. "What about Cocoon interests you?"

She tilted her head thoughtfully. "It only fell into ruin two hundred years ago. I think it would be interesting to see what has changed in that time."

"Two hundred years can be a long time," Ronan agreed. "Or maybe not at all -- it might be just as interesting to see what hasn't changed."

... Not that he knew anything at all about Cocoon.

"What's Gran Pulse like?"

Yeul smiled slightly. "Large and dangerous," she said. "Mostly uninhabited. The majority of humanity live in a city called Academia and while there's a few other villages, they tend to be very small and well guarded."

They had to be, to exist on Gran Pulse and even that was no guarantee they would survive.

"Stephanie Brown, and I'm a senior," she began. With an expressive eyeroll she added, "Born and raised in Gotham City, where in fact I'd barely even left for more than a day or two before I came here. I actually just came back from a few weeks in China, but honestly, as much as I'd love to visit another planet -- and I'm not picky as long as it's not covered with things that want to eat me -- I'd seriously settle for a trip to anywhere in Europe."

Not that she could afford one on her own.

"There are surprisingly few planets where things want to eat you," Ronan assured her. Then paused. "... In my own galaxy, anyway. I suppose I can't speak for everyone's."

"I guess it could be exaggerated in mine," Stephanie agreed. For all she knew, and she totally wouldn't put it past him, this was another one of Bruce's stupid attempts to discourage her from getting ideas. "I can never tell who's actually been, and who's just making it up. Besides, if it was just a few things that think people are tasty, as opposed to the entire population, that wouldn't be so bad."

"I'm Angelica, and I'm a junior, and I'm from New Jersey," Angelica said. "I guess one place I'd love to go would be Italy. Or France."

"My name is Anna Korlov, and I'm a...junior," Anna said after a pause to think about it, because she'd been a sophomore for fifty years and it was a little odd to have progressed beyond that. "I'm from--" another stutter, because it hadn't been Thunder Bay when she was alive "--Thunder Bay, which is in Ontario, Canada, and...there are a lot of places I'd like to go. I've never really been anywhere. I guess I'd like to start with Vancouver. I was going to run away from home and go there," she said a little wistfully. "Start over."

"I'm Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar," Sholeh said with a shy wave at the class. "I'm a sophomore and I'm from the Landscape of Tryadnea. As for places I'd like to go..." She shrugged and gave a hapless smile. "I'm not entirely sure. Coming to Fandom is the first time I've been away from home."

"Um, I'm Billy Kaplan, I'm a junior, I'm from New York City, and I'd like to go to Europe," he said. "I've never really been, and it's where all the history comes from, so I could easily spend months and months seeing everything."

"My name's Mercedes Thompson and I'm a junior. I'm from, well... now I guess I'm from Portland, Oregon." Or Fandom, maybe. She'd spent more time here than in Portland.

"I've actually thought that it would be fun to backpack through Europe - just catch whatever countries I want at the time."

I am around all day! Also, packing because I move tomorrow, but to keep myself sane I will be keeping an eye on this as much as possible. ;)

Honestly, I half suspect that when the universe senses an impending move, it suddenly decides to be Helpful and Generous and re-manifests all the things you lost over the years. I'm pretty sure this is the most logical explanation.

... It would explain the folder of music I just found on a hard drive. ;)

No, for me, usually the universe just decides to be Helpful and Generous... by making me sick. Stupid headcold.

... ... Although I did just find a sweater I didn't even know I still had.

I forget--would Ronan be able to notice Zeela and Zhahar somehow?
