"Today, we're not going to bother with lecture very much," Callie said brightly. "Because today's topic is greed. Greed is defined as wanting things you don't need. Isn't that funny? I don't remember anyone asking you what you need. And what's wrong with wanting things, anyway?"

Nothing, as far as she was concerned.

"Thomas Aquinas -- yes, I've done my research -- said that greed is bad because the world is a zero-sum game. If I'm wealthy, someone else is destitute. So apparently Thomas Aquinas was very into communism and not so much Prada."

Just saying.

"Let's cut to the chase. On your desks, each of you will find one iPad 2. None of you need it. No one in the history of the world has needed an iPad. It's a complete luxury item. Do you want it? Are you going to take it? If you don't take it, I'm going to flip a coin. Heads, I sell it and give the money to charity. Tails, I use the money to buy myself expensive shoes. Or you could keep the iPad, because it has Angry Birds on it and it's really, really pretty."

Oh, right, one last point.

"Just in case you're not into iPads, you can trade your iPad in for one of these diamond and gold necklaces, or whatever your equivalent-cost luxury good of choice would be. I can get whatever you like. Don't feel limited by the item. It's the greed that matters. Right?"

Take an iPad. Or trade it in for a necklace. Or something else luxury. Ask Callie and she'll see what she can do. (No bottles of wine, because you're underage, and keep to the same price range of $500ish.)

Or return it for either a donation to charity or Callie getting a brand-new pair of shoes.

There's no trap here: there's no consequence for either choice (except you being faced with your own greed). Enjoy your iPad and/or ridiculous decision to pass one up.

Alec had exactly zero interest in the iPad, and possibly even less interest in the necklaces, but the thing was that he couldn't really think up anything else that was that expensive that he did have an interest in -- at least not anything he wanted to order from someone else rather than picking it out carefully himself.

"I'm all right," he said politely, offering the iPad back to Callie. "Thank you."

"I'm keeping the iPad." Jace wasn't the greediest person on Earth but this was a free electronic do-hickey and he got the feeling Callie would be ending up with more shoe money than anything once that coin got flipped.

He didn't explain -- he was worried she'd take it back if he did -- but he was going to send it back to his team. Maybe nobody needed an iPad, but he was pretty certain one wouldn't go unloved for long in a house with five teenagers. He figured that was practically the same as giving the money to charity.

Honestly, they could raffle the iPads off for donations or smash them with hammers. Callie didn't care what the kids did with them, once they had them.

"Congratulations on your new iPad," she said, warmly. "Do you want to weigh in on the subject of greed?"

"Two options," she said. "You keep the iPad and admit that you're greedy, or you give it back to me and feel all noble and virtuous. I might even give money to charity."

Oh, that put an interesting wrinkle in things, didn't it? Callie hadn't anticipated that. But she liked it.

"Sure, why not?" she said. She walked over to her desk and picked up one of the iPads that had been sitting there, after another student returned it. "You were the first person to think of asking for more than the free stuff you were already given. That's impressive. Here's your reward."

She held it out. "Want to make a statement on greed?"

First off: I'm really sorry for dropping off the face of the earth last week. I managed to fry a three-week-old laptop, and it's in the shop for the next two weeks.

Protip: do not carry saltwater humidifiers anywhere near electronics, because the few stray drops of water that slosh out of the bottom will absolutely zap your technology to death.
