Basic Investigative Techniques, Thursday, Period Three

"Mornin', kiddos." Yeah, it was only barely still morning, but like Jake cared. He kept to his own damn schedule, which meant a lot of lurking around at night, and falling asleep on random lawns because some things never change, AU or not.

"Today we're talkin' about bugs. Not the buzzy, creepy-crawly kind, the kind you can use to listen in on someone's conversation. Especially if you think they might be hiding something, like sympathies or connections to those who refuse to submit to the proper order of things."

"A bug- sometimes also called a wire, or a 'covert listening device'," that last bit was said with airquotes, "can sometimes be something designed specificially for that purpose, but it doesn't actually have to be. All that's required is a microphone and a transmitter, so with the right know-how, you can even turn a cell phone into a bug from a distance. There have even been instances of using car's security systems to listen in on conversations. Not that we have much use for cars here, but," he shrugged. "So- class discussion question: if you could listen in on the conversation of anyone here in Fandom, who would it be, and why?"

After giving some time for the students to supply answers, Jake pulled out a bag and placed it on his desk. "And now for the take-home portion of today's assignment: take one of these, plant it somewhere where you'll be able to overhear your intended target, and report back to me."

"It would probably be you, sir, but just to find out how I'm doing in the class," Dave answered.

He expected the answer would be 'Not very well,' but still, it would be nice to know.
