Wednesday: Study Hall

The ocelots were getting restless. They yowled in complaint in their cage, occasionally snapping at each other when one crawled over the other.

The Madri seemed not to care. They merely took their positions around the room and kept an eye open for troublemakers.

Sholeh had an assignment today. After her failure (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3170514.html?thread=193034194#t193034194) in Ms. Maggotbone's class yesterday, it had been decided that Sholeh needed a lesson. The kind of lesson that could best be taught with a magical quill.

I will not be a glutton.

100 times.

She could do that, right? Sure, writing with a quill seemed difficult (and wasn't there supposed to be ink?) but she could write it as fast as possible, and then deliver it with a heartfelt apology. And be more wary of Ms. Maggotbone in the future.

Poor Sholeh. She had so much to learn. Especially about the magic quill.

Sholeh jumped a little. She hadn't been paying attention to anything other than trying not to cry. Considering she was only on her fifth iteration, that was almost certainly going to be a losing battle.

"I didn't mean to be," she said quietly, hoping the Madri would understand. "I was just trying the desserts."

Oh, Sholeh. You think a guy who cages ocelots was going to feel bad you you?

"Ms. Maggotbone offered them to me!" Sholeh burst out, not caring she was breaking the rules about staying quiet. "I didn't steal any--she told me to try them!"

Sholeh clapped both hands over her mouth, wincing again as that pulled on the skin of her reddened hand. "I'm not a trouble maker," she said in a near-whisper. "I'm not!"

Sholeh hadn't been on earth long enough to get blase about that gesture, so she found it spectacularly creepy.

=I'll give him something to keep an eye on,= Zeela growled.

::Shhhh!:: Sholeh said, bending back over her lines. And trying not to whimper as the quill started cutting at her skin again. ::I don't want any of them watching anything!::

Sholeh didn't believe the Madri. They were creepy and wrong, even if they were authority. But Sholeh wasn't sure how to turn them down without earning herself further punishment.

*Let me handle this,* Zhahar suggested.

The voice that came out of Sholeh's mouth was not her own, but close enough that someone would need to be listening well (or fairly familiar with either voice) to notice. "No thank you," she said. "This is my punishment. I should take it as it is."

Sholeh managed a hurried nod and a suppressed gasp of pain as she started the next line.

Inwardly, Zeela was raging and Zhahar was fretting, but neither of them could help. Not while the Madri watched.

And Sholeh was firmly convinced they were everywhere.

Bucky leaned closer to the girl. "You should, like, play a prank in here or something," he insisted. "Mr. Maji are totally a fun guys. It'll be awesome."

OH BECAUSE SHOLEH WAS GOING TO FALL FOR THAT, CAT.

"Go away!" she hissed, still writing her lines. "You just want to get me in trouble!"

The Madri were not fun guys.

"Get you in trouble?" Bucky asked, trying to pretend to feel hurt and not doing a good job of it. "But I'm such a cute little kitty!" No, he wasn't.

"...Tell you what: Five bucks?"

"You are not cute," Sholeh muttered. "You look like something the other cats dragged in."

Beat.

"You probably don't even have five dollars."

"I bet you five dollars I do!!!" Bucky insisted. He pulled a ratty wad of bills from who knows where and started uncrumpling and counting them. "One... two... three... um. Okay, so I bet you THREE bucks that I have five... wait a minute. We seem to have encountered some technical difficulties."

He counted through the bills again.

"Upon further review, the bet has been deemed invalid."

"See?" Sholeh's quill stopped moving, a much-needed respite. "Told you."

Bucky sat quietly at his desk and tried not to look at the ocelots. If he came to Study hall and was very, very good every day, Umbridge was BOUND to let him beat people up eventually, right? He already knew that she liked cats!

He just wished this clever plan didn't involve being watched by a crazy people.

Bucky started trembling and attempted to hide under the desk. "...She started it?" he tried.

A very very terrified Bucky ran away as fast as he could.

He was going to need to work out some other way to get into Umbridge's good graces.
