Moral Philosophy, Monday

"...So last week concluded our classes on classic moral philosophers, and why they've got the wrong end of the stick," Kaidan started. He had a vague smile on his face to match the fog in his mind, his fingertips pressing into the hand-outs. "Now, we're going to be talking about the right way to do it. I'm going to talk for a while, and then you're going to take this test - it's just a couple of scenarios. Describe what you're going to do and why."

He cleared his throat.

"Order is important," he said. "It's what keeps our society together, you know? Everything's got to be in its proper place. Because if you make a machine, it's got to have all the pieces fitting together, otherwise it's not going to move. Morality should be an extension of that-- punishment for acts that cross the boundaries of our order, praise for those who work well within it."

You'd almost think he'd forgotten about the mutiny he'd encouraged Shepard into only a few short months ago.

"Most of us are just cogs in the machine," he continued, "We have to trust that the people who operate the levers know what they're doing. That they know when it's a good age to start looking for a partner, and when it's a good age to sit down and learn and keep your hands to yourself. To trust that they know who the enemy is, and they know how to direct us against that enemy, to keep us safe."

"We can have bad leaders, no doubt about that," he added, "But if we don't put our faith in them, then they don't even get a chance to be more than that."

He started handing out papers. "Now think about that while you fill in your tests."

Topher's test answers were concise and to the point. Also, mean. There was also that.

1. Tase them and then report them. Obviously.

2. Latter by default. Friends = nonexistant, family = nonissue.

3. If I go out of business I'll have more time for doing Umbridgey things. So, that.

Natalie's answers, too, were concise and to the point. But mostly because she had no interest in elaborating when she was only answering like she knew was expected of her.

1. Detain and report them.

2. Do my best to save Principal Umbridge.

3. Catch the rebel and look to secure loyal financing.

Being that she was a non-Imperio'd independent thinker, there were several lies in there.

Thomasina was many things -- time-displaced, genius, covert member of the resistance.

She was not, however, stupid.

1. Report the raid to the proper authorities in such a manner that it does not become traceable back to me; in this way I may continue as a covert operative and report on further insurgent activities.

2. Being both wise and powerful, I trust that Principal Umbridge would in no way require assistance from a lowly muggle such as myself, nor is there any such assistance that I could render; as such, I would do what I can to save my friends and family. Unless they are with the resistance, in which case I would do nothing.

3. If they are offering the money before staying, I would take the money, offer them shelter, and then report them to the proper authorities such that they may come during the night. In this way, a resistance member is able to be taken in and I am able to use their ill-gotten gains to aid loyal denizens of the island.

Sholeh was loyal, but mostly because she believed firmly in right and wrong, and authority was usually right. Right? She knew her mothers were sometimes considered to be stern and authoritarian by some, but they were good women. She still thought that Umbridge was like that, too, and the members of the Resistance were just being childish.

Though sometimes she wondered about that. Sometimes, the proposed punishments sounded a little...harsh.

1. Try to talk them out of whatever they're planning and explain to them why they should stop being so childish. The resistance is just making things hard for everyone; if they stopped making trouble, the island would be ever so much nicer for everyone. If they seemed unwilling to see reason, I would warn the business. Oh, and tell someone, of course.

2. I would rescue my family, of course! High-Inquisiter Umbridge is very powerful. She could probably save herself AND my family.

Sholeh had to hesitate a long time over her final answer. In all likelihood, she thought it would probably be best to take the money and hide the person, but she didn't think her teacher would like that answer much.

3. I would point out that all loyal people on the island have plenty of shelter and use that as a way to try to convince them to stop being a member of the resistance. Oh, and tell someone.
