Wednesday: Study Hall

The oranges were still there. Luckily Jamie and his dupes had found a use for them.

Which is why part of study hall was now a batting cage using oranges instead of baseball.

Hey no one said it was a good use of the oranges.

Study Hall is open. Sorry for the stickyness.

Arietty crept in about halfway through the period, having followed the scent of citrus through the walls.

She was currently attempting to make off with one of the oranges without anyone noticing. What? This was Fandom! Oranges rolled off by themselves all the time, right?

Okay. It was a very tiny person. Trying to steal an orange.

"Janet? If that's you, tell Hank to buy his own oranges!"

Arietty sighed -- a nice trick when trying to balance an orange taller than you are. It wasn't like she hadn't realized she was about to be seen.

She turned, poised with the orange like she was Atlas. "My name isn't Janet!"

"Ah," Jamie said idly tossing an orange from one hand to another. "You're not Hank in female form are you? Or that kid from the Young Avengers?"

Arietty shook her head. "I don't know who they are. You've met other borrowers?"

"Borrowers? Nah. Avengers," Jamie said with a shrug. "A couple of heroes about your size. Need any help with that orange?"

Arietty bit her lip. "It is rather heavy. Do you have any smaller ones? It'd take me a week to eat all this, and I'm not sure it'll last that long."

"I think we got a smaller one someplace," Jamie said digging through the pile and finding an orange that was almost the size of Arietty. "I can have a dupe carry it and you back to the dorm if you want."

"Oh!" Arietty said, pleased "That'd be very kind! I'm still looking for a good way to get back and forth."

Evan's continuing quest to do some reading in a sort of social setting led him, today, to Study Hall, where he'd been fully expecting to sit down and read his book in peace and quiet.

But when he stepped into the room, his expression lit up and his book was forgotten almost completely.

"Batting cage!"

It wasn't quite the same as playing in an honest-to-goodness baseball game, but it was the closest thing he'd found since coming to the island.

That of course got one of the Jamie's attention.

"Batter up!" he shouted as he threw an orange at Evan's direction.

Probably should have given Evan a bat first.

Probably! But Evan could wing it like a champ! His Uncle Cluster had taught him how to improvise, after all.

He gave his book a good swing, and sent the orange flying back toward Jamie. It was decidedly less messy than a bat would have been, true. But it was almost as fun!

"I don't suppose you could spare me a bat before throwing the next one?"

He could just form his arm into one, if it came down to it. He knew a bit of shapeshifting, after all. But when faced with the option to smack fruit around with a malformed limb or an actual baseball bat...

"Oh! A bat!" Jamie exclaimed. "Right that would have been helpful, wouldn't it?"

"So they tell me," Evan replied, smiling broadly. "I try not to beat on things with library books if I can help it, you know?"

Even if it had worked pretty well.

"Yeah, the library will get pretty pissed about that," Jamie said with a nod as one of the dupes procured a bat. "And you don't want to piss of the library."

"The librarian seems like the kind of guy who really, really takes his job seriously. And besides, books deserve more respect than that."

Evan probably would have swung just about anything that was handy, if he hadn't had the book in hand.

"Oh. I'm not talking about the librarian," Jamie said shaking a finger before tossing an orange Evan's way. "I'm talking about the actual library."

Bat in hand, Evan gave a swing, and then blinked up at Jamie after the inevitable exploding of the orange that happened when he gave it a good wallop.

"The library itself? I knew weird stuff happened in there sometimes, but it actually gets mad, too?"

Darcy was still wearing her tiara and lei and had confetti on her clothes and hair. Ask her how much she cared. Plus, tiara's were cool.

Physics on the other hand...physics was the reason she was sighing dramatically and plopping down into a chair in study hall.
