Heroes and Villains 101, Tuesday, Period 3

This week, class was actually being held in the danger shop. Kotetsu was now wearing a domino mask along with his usual vest, tie, and cap combo, and you better believe he thought that this was somehow a good disguise. At least he hadn't pulled out the form-fitting blue tights, students. Just be thankful about that.

Professor Tomoe stood over at the side of the room, arms crossed. His face was free of shadows this week. He scowled deeply, but made no move to either help or hinder Kotetsu.

"This week," Kotetsu announced, grinning at the group gathered, "we're going to be running through a scenario that I see on a regular basis back in Sternbild. You see, anybody can do heroic things. It doesn't matter if you have powers or not. But in order to be a full-time, career hero, you need funding. And in Sternbild, unless you were born wealthy, the best way to go about getting the money you need is to find a company to sponsor you, to slap their logo on your uniform, and to make certain that the world sees you wearing it!"

Heroism kind of took a special little sidestep into the realm of reality television in Sternbild, yes. But crime still got fought, so it was okay, right?

"The scenario we're going to throw you into is pretty straightforward," Kotetsu went on to explain. "Some thugs just robbed a bank. They're not NEXT," a beat, "I mean, they don't have powers or anything, though they probably have guns. And all of them but one have been apprehended by other heroes in the city. The last one is running loose, and it's your job to capture him. The trouble is, the network wants you to wait before you make your arrest. They're going to cut to a commercial break... The suspense brings up ratings."

Yes, this was an issue that Wild Tiger frequently had to deal with. And it frustrated him to no end. You could maybe tell by the way he wrinkled his nose as he was talking about it.

"So, you have a criminal on the loose. He's armed, and trust me, he doesn't want to get caught. You're in the middle of a city with a really dense population, and the longer he's running around, the more likely he'll hurt someone, or get away. Modern commercial breaks usually last three minutes."

He gestured to the city street layout that was spread before them, and the Danger Shop simulation roared to life, bringing up a glittering cityscape that seemed like a shinier version of New York. One masked gunman ran through a thick crowd of innocent civilians who looked... more or less used to this sort of thing. Overhead, there was a helicopter with a television camera aimed toward the group as a whole, with a screen on the side counting down the seconds until they cut away from the commercials again and it was okay to apprehend the villain. The numbers ticked down from the three minute mark, agonisingly slow.

"So, deal with it, kids!" Kotetsu said.
