Modern Technology for Absolute Beginners, Period 1, Tuesday, 7/10
The front of the room was empty this morning. It remained this way for about thirty seconds after the bell. And then, suddenly, the lights went out. A few seconds later, a voice could be heard at the front of the room. "Professor Lannister couldn't be here today. But don't worry. He arranged for a substitute. His name? Yakko Warner."
Suddenly, Yakko's face was illuminated by a candle's flame, held near his head. "The sun gave us light. And then we learned to harness the power of fire, giving us light wherever we went. But fire was frequently painful, and burned all of your things. And so we needed a better way."
If any of the students knew what a fire extinguisher sounded like, well, that was the sound they heard now before the candle went out. This only lasted for a moment, though, as two lightbulbs started shining after being... plugged into Yakko's ears for some reason.
"Throughout the 1800's, inventors plugged away at harnessing light in some kind of bulb form, until Thomas Edison came up with the most commercially appealing patent with his carbon filament design." Yakko tapped each light bulb, which went inside his ears and clanked around until light was shining out of his eyes. He turned toward a pulled-down screen at the front of the room, which showed shadows of his pupils. He blinked, and the image was replaced with a simple diagram.
"Over time, the incandescent light bulb was modified slightly into this. You send electricity into the contact at the bottom, it goes up through the wires, and into a piece of metal we'll call the filament. As the filament heats up, it lights up, giving everyone something to see by. The gases in the bulb mostly make sure the filament lasts a long time."
"And that," Yakko said, turning around and switching off the lights in his head by pulling on his right ear, "is how lightbulbs work."
The room still in darkness, he added, "There are other kinds of light bulbs, of course, but they all pretty much work the same way. Use electricity, something heats up, BAM!, light. But two questions remain."
"First! How do you control the light? Well, there are a few options. For one, you can have a pull chain. Like this!" Yakko tugged on his ear several times, only half of which the class could see due to the darkness after he clicked the lights in his head off.
"Second, you've got that wonder piece of 1980's technology, the Clapper!" Yakko started clapping his hands wildly, as well as whistling and hooting as the room lights flickered on and off. By the time he stopped, he was over by the light switch. "And finally, you have the trusty light switch, which can be used to hold raves!"
He started flicking the lights on and off much faster than before as dance music started playing.
"You have two participation options for today!" Yakko shouted over the music. "Either party or answer the other big question: How many students does it take to screw in a light bulb? You'll find light and desk lamps in the back of the room. Team up with as many in a group as you need to come up with an answer! Then party!"
The terrible thing was, Yakko was being nice and toned it down for Tyrion's sake.
