A classroom full of teenagers. That was going to be... something.

Kaidan stood at the front of the class, a datapad in his hand and his eyes trained on the students. "Good morning," he said, "And welcome to Introduction to Robotics. I'm Lieutenant Commander Kaidan Alenko of the Systems Alliance, I look forward to meeting the rest of you." He cleared his throat. "Over the past year, my... universe--" It was weird, okay? "--suffered under an attack that involved advanced robotic AIs - that's artificial intelligences - called the geth. Much has been said about the geth and what level of sentience they've got. It's something we'll be talking about later down the line."

He put the datapad down on the desk. "But not yet. I'm given to understand most folks here aren't from the same place, though," he said, "and as we're going to be talking about advanced technology, I'd like to know where your worlds are at, and what experience you might have had in dealing with robotics, virtual intelligences, things like that. So let's start off there."

"Hmm." Ace had to consider it, despite the grin that wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. "My first period teacher's a space-puppy who can teleport and turn himself into a yo-yo, so.... tie?"

"A yo-yo? Really?" Huh. "Well, this class is better."

"There's no robots in that one, so ...maybe." Ace had certain loyalties to Professor Puppy-Head, after all, and this was only the first session of this class. "This is way cooler than anything at my old school, that's for sure."

She tapped the schematic. "Though I don't care what he says, it needs rocket launchers. It's practically naked without them."

"Tell me about it," Topher said. "How's it supposed to patrol if it doesn't have something to blow up anyone who isn't supposed to be there?"

Tsk, tsk. Sloppy work, Kaidan.

"...Mostly this is just making me want to build a better one."

"Well, other robots at least." Ace had various reservation about blowing up people and huge ones about animals. "It could have some kind of life sensors, and anything artificial goes boom, but living things get a report sent back to base unless they attack it or something."

"Yeah, that's fair," Topher granted. "So just any hostile tech. Robots or any big guns, stuff like that. So it could sense... I don't know, destructive noises. And then it'd go off."

"But lots of shielding so it won't blow itself up." Ace, you're not going to be allowed to build one. Stop scribbling. "Though, heh. That could be cool, actually. If you hid the weapons so it looks unarmed, but if somebody messes with it, kaBANG. Sacrificial pawn."

"Ooooh, nice," Topher said, impressed. "So just when the enemy's setting up and figuring out their attack plan, all of a sudden that drone they thought was just a camera is taking out their first line." He leaned over her schematics, head tilted thoughtfully. "You could maybe have it be, like, expand-able, so it looks tiny and compact until the hostile tech alert goes off, and then it expands and the weapons turn on."

"Click whirr kaCHUNKA!" Someone had seen way too many action films, oh yes. "And there's a cannon and five laserbeams pointed at your face."

"Yes! Yes!" Oh god. These two were going to blow up the island. "Dude. How cool would it be to make one for real? Like if we got to use the Danger Shop or something."

Uh, nice try.

"So...pretend holographic for real?"

"Exactly."

"Well, I guess nobody could expel us for unlicensed mayhem and damaging school property that way."

No reason for the specificity there. No reason at all.

Topher, genius that he was, begged to differ with that, narrative.

"You've done that too?"

While they both continued to ignore the fact that they could get expelled just for, you know, sneaking into the Danger Shop.

"Yeah, I blew up the art room. What'd you do?"

They really, really could.

"There was an incident in a science lab." Big surprise. "I... maybe made a gas that spread around the rest of the school and caused havoc."

"Whoops." The most matter-of-fact whoops ever. "Mine came from the science lab. I just happened to be standing next to the art room when I got caught carrying the nitro putty, so I pretended it was clay."

"Smart," Topher said with a serious nod. "Anyway, it's the art room. Who needs a whole room just for art? You probably encouraged them to use their space better. Or something."

Ace snickered. "I don't mind art, but they were way too picky about putting things away properly at that school." In a pinched-up, posh-accented voice, she added, "A place for everything and everything in its place..."

"Ewwww. Ew. Ew." Topher had Feelings about school rules. Namely, that they sucked. "Good thing you blew stuff up when you did. Did you get kicked out?"

"Not so much kicked as dragged by the ear but y---aaaaroooooooooo?"

That sentence wasn't supposed to end that way.

Then again, Ace wasn't supposed to be a black-furred, green-eyed wolf puppy.

And that puppy was probably not supposed to be on the furniture, though the teacher hadn't really specified, so it was his own fault if she shed.

"...Arooo?"

Topher blinked.

"It's always the ones that can bite me," he groused. Then he eyed Ace sternly. "Don't bite me."

Ace tried for 'Don't be stupid, why would I bite you,' but it came out "Rff!"

Then she tried for 'ROWWWWWWWR' and it came out "Yip!"

Then she rested her nose on her front paws and whined. Loudly.

"Yeah, yeah," he grumbled. "Just sit tight until class is over and you can come hang out in my room." An idea occured to him and he tilted his head. "Hey, maybe I can steal my roommate's blankets for you to sleep on."

...Good luck with that, Topher.

Had Ace known about the Drawer of Inappropriate Starches, she... wouldn't have been able to do any more than whine again.

She'd do that anyway, because blankets, eh, but some bacon-flavoured crisps would be really nice right about now.
