Kicking Ass, Teamwork Style (Wednesday, Period 2, Week 1)

Like it had been for the first class of last session, the Danger Shop was programmed as a backyard strewn with training dummies and a makeshift archery range. (It had been a nice backyard. She kind of missed it.) Students entering the room would find themselves stepping through the doorway onto the back porch; Kennedy, pacing back and forth in the grass near the archery target, gestured for everyone to step out onto the lawn.

"Anyone here because the office messed up their schedule?" she began without preamble, pausing a moment to count hands if the answer was yes. "It happens. You'll be fine. No previous experience necessary here."

She picked up an arrow from a quiver on the bench, turned it over in her fingers a couple of times, and then whirled with superhuman speed to throw the arrow and come around the full 360 degrees to face the students again.

The arrow was embedded in the target up to the fletching. Sorry, kids. Kennedy was not feeling particularly modest today.

"So welcome to your workshop on Kicking Ass, Teamwork Style," she said with a self-satisfied little smirk. "Should be self-explanatory. I'm Kennedy, class of 2011, and I'm a Vampire Slayer. Which, also, self-explanatory. Like I said, no previous experience required here, 'cause half the point of this thing is, when it really comes down to it, and you have to save the world or handle a Fandom-type crisis or just bail a friend out? You can totally do it."

She shrugged. "Maybe not by yourself. Which is where the teamwork thing comes in. Obviously. I was part of a group of people who mostly never even met each other before, and we all got thrown together, sorta, when some big nasty evil came out of hibernation. Me, I was totally ready to fight, 'cause hi, trained for it my whole life, but a lot of the others? Not so much. Hell, some of 'em had no clue what they got into, but there wasn't exactly a choice. So we had to learn. Which I like to think worked, given my world didn't end." That time. It kept trying to, though.

Kennedy crossed her arms and leaned against the hay bale stacks that made up the archery target. "So, your turn. Give me an idea what kind of team we're gonna be working with for the next few weeks. Powers or skills if you've got 'em, one or two things you think you're good at, something you might wanna cover in this class. Oh," she added, "and names, duh. Do that and you guys can call it a day."

Evan was smiling a little as he listened to the lecture, right up until the part where the teacher said they had to share what their powers were.

... He would be there all day if he had to list them off. Though he wasn't so good with a lot of what he could do anyhow. Which... narrowed it down some, at least.

Mercy would have to be especially careful about keeping her speed to human normal in this class.

Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to sign up for it. Of course, Bran would say it would be a good lesson in self-control and blending, but still.

Evan smiled, contemplating for a moment if he should be giving his real name, or his codename when he introduced himself. For the sake of the other students, he settled on his real name, at least.

"I'm Evan," he greeted everyone as he stood up to introduce himself. "I've got some training in fighting with a few different weapons from back home, but I haven't really used it much in actual fights except for a couple of times. I can stretch my arms and legs... like... really far," which sounded silly, but he used it more than anything else, "and I can use energy blasts."

There was another moment's pause, and then he added, "I can fly, too. But I'm really bad at it, so far. I don't think that's really something we'll be covering in this class, though, huh?"

"I'm pretty good with a sword," Evan chimed in, perking up at the bit of approval that she'd given. "Which I guess is kind of weird for a kid from Kansas to use, but my uncle made sure I knew it, and I think I like it best."

And yes, he totally used it along with the stretchy limbs.

Mercy was still a little wide-eyed over how fast Kennedy had moved. She hadn't seen any human move that fast before. Werewolves and herself came pretty close, yes, but Kennedy sure didn't smell like either of those and if she was a vampire slayer then she wasn't a vamp either.

"Um, I'm Mercedes Thompson..."

Powers and skills. Well, she couldn't exactly tell Kennedy she was fast like that or about her enhanced sense of smell and hearing - not without explaining them, so...

"I don't have much I can share in the way of powers or anything." There, that was a nice way of avoiding the question without actually lying.

And maybe she'd better leave her intro at that.

"Oh, sure," Mercy said quickly. "I like to read a lot - history mostly, but fiction, whatever. I've also learned some about car mechanics and I've done a little martial arts."

"I'm Terry McGinnis," Terry said. "No powers, but I'm a pretty good brawler. I'm quick, and I can manage pretty well when I'm outnumbered, and I'm good at sneaking around if that would be useful."

"You know, pretty much anything you'd need to survive being a punk kid on the streets of Gotham City, I've learned and used at some point."
