Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

"Even more jealous," he said excitedly. "I love planes. I've only ever been on one once, though. It was... kind of one of the main reasons I decided to come to school here."

"Oh? Do they teach you how to fly one, here?" Arietty spun in place on Frank's shoulder, looking up at the sky as though she might spot a student flight right now.

"Oh! No, unfortunately," he said sheepishly. "I got to fly from home to here, though. But man, how awesome would a pilot class be?"

Doooork.

"That would be wonderful!" Arietty agreed. "I've already gotten to drive, but I didn't get to fly the plane, I had to let James do that!"

"You live in London and your friend's a pilot?" Oh god, Arietty. He was never going to shut up about this now. "You have the coolest life."

That . . . never happened to Arietty. "My other friend, Spiller, has a motorbike. He almost ran me over with it when we first met."

"Neat." Well. "I mean, you know, ow, but as long as you didn't get squished. That's so cool. Do you get to ride on it?"

"He offered, but Mum says he only really wanted to get into my pants."

...

"So he's... your size, right?"

"Spiller? He's a little taller, but he's a Borrower like me."

"Okay, whew." Though he was still blushing a little at the expression, because he was tiny and innocent like that. "Oh, and on that note, right. I don't know if there are any other Borrowers around here? I mean, we've got a lot of, what did you call us, beans? But if we've got other Borrowers, I haven't seen any."

"Well, yes," Arietty said. "You wouldn't. You know, unless they fall out of the sky and land on your head accidentally."

Frank grinned. "You mean that's not how you meet everyone?"

"Of course not!" Arietty cried. Then blushed. "Though I did meet James by running into a door. It was my first time borrowing!"

"Ow," Frank said sympathetically. "Wait, borrowing? I guess that explains the name. What do you, you know, borrow?"

"Things I need. Like rope or cloth or bits of paper and things. . . . But we only take things we know the beans won't miss!"

Mostly because that helped them stay more secret.

"Huh." Frank wasn't sure what tiny people needed with human-sized rope, but wow. "That must be really scary," he offered. "You leave where you live, risk getting squished, and then hurry to take stuff because you can't exactly get by paying for it? That... is pretty rough."

Arietty blinked. "That's just what Borrowers do. It can be scary sometimes, but mostly it's a lot of fun, and then you get to bring home new things."

"But then bring it back," he supplied. "Because... borrower. Right?"

". . . Yes." Arietty might have paused a touch too long on that one. They did sometimes give their borrowings back . . . but not very often. But beans didn't like to be reminded they existed entirely to provide borrowings for Arietty and her fellow Borrowers.

"'Kay." She was tiny, so it wasn't like he could really squint at her face to try to see if she looked like she was telling the truth. Anyway, it wasn't like she'd taken his stuff, so it didn't matter. "...Wait, where do you guys get your clothes?"

"Some of it we make out of bits of cloth. But mostly, we try to find beans with the right size dolls."

"That makes sense," Frank said with a serious nod. "So if you want, we could head to a toy store sometime and get you some clothes from there. Because there aren't really enough little kids here to steal from their doll collections."

He paused, then tilted his head so he could actually get a good look at her and her outfit. "This is nice," he offered.

Oh, Frank. So straight, yet so into clothes.

Arietty blushed. "Thank you. That'd be good, I don't bring extra clothes with me when I go borrowing."
