Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Maeby was seriously regretting this whole, running away from home to some bizarre summer camp that existed in the past. Or future. With crazy people.

She was pretty relieved at seeing Sparkle, however.

"Okay, good," she said. "I really thought for a second 'Sparkle' might be some kind of magical friendship unicorn and I'm so not up for that right now."

Nobody told her about Pinkie Pie yet, no.

"Yeah, the magical sparkle pony isn't a unicorn, anyhow," replied Sparkle, going right ahead and taking a short walk around Maeby, here. "She's pink, though. Answers to Pinkie."

Sometimes, Sparkle did not need to lie in order to shit with you.

"Yeah, you're hilarious," Maeby said. "... wait. Don't ... tell me if you're being serious."

Really. Don't.

"So ... did you just ... write Sparkle down on the sign-up sheet to fuck with people, or were you parents really, really stoned?"

Maeby's parents had made her sing in a folk music band. At, like, eight. She knew about hippie parenting.

Sparkle made a face, wrinkling his nose before pulling a sparkler out of his pocket, and then a lighter. And up it went in a shower of sparks.

"I was named after one of these things," he replied, shrugging. "Like, right there, in the hospital room. My dad came in with one lit, and my mother was all, oh there's a name like it was actually a good idea or something, and here I am."

If nothing else, it gave him an excuse to carry tiny firework-things around in his pockets.

"So I was right on the stoned thing," she said. "My parents put out a birth announcement that said There's a Girl in My Soup."

A really, really graphic one. Spoiler: it had been a water birth. So ... yeah.
myownface: (Hmmmm.)

"Lucky." Sparkle let his sparkler die down, watching it intently as he spoke. "Birth announcements are temporary, at least. Though I have to ask why they'd name you something like maybe."

Yes, he was aware of how it was spelled. But still.

"I would have to say, also drugs?" Maeby suggested. "They never told me. I don't have a cool story with pyrotechnics involved. I dunno. It's a nickname. It says 'Mae' on my birth certificate but why would I want to be 'Mae'? That sounds old."

"Yeah, you pretty much have to go by Mae if you develop an obsession for yarn and try to crochet your own cats," Sparkle decided. "So, what the hell brings you to this place? Chasing a better future or some shit like that?"

The sparkler burned out, and he tossed the charred stick on the ground.

"I was going to bullshit like that on my entrance essay, but it turns out I didn't need one," she said helpfully. "I'm just sick of everyone I know. I guess this is kind of like running away from home except with better preparation. What about you?"
myownface: (Mmmhmm.)

Sparkle snorted, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pack of smokes. Screw you, he'd smoke at the welcome picnic if he wanted.

"Less running away, more being sent out of Toronto before I could fuck up the rest of my life by breaking into another house or some shit."
