Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

Hanna put on a nametag of her own and then looked around for her assigned little sibling. After awhile, she came upon someone who she assumed was not from around here.

"Hi," she greeted, a friendly smile on her face. "Are you Liara?"

Liara spun around. If she looked like she was about to flail, it was because she probably was. "Er, yes," she said, "I mean. How did you-- where am I?"

"This is the welcome picnic for new Fandom High students and teachers," Hanna replied. Realizing the other girl seemed confused, she gently added, "On earth."

"...I... don't know where Earth is," Liara said. "And I have... never seen your species before."

FLAIL.

"Oh wow, you take this newbie thing to a whole new level," Hanna said. "Um, okay, let's start with the basics. This is Earth and the main species is human. We get some aliens, too. But usually just here...in Fandom."

It was better to start with that. Fandom weirdness was next. Maybe.

"So you're a human," Liara surmised. Then she facepalmed. "That... would explain the description on my translator," she mumbled.

"Yeah, I'm human. Most people here are," Hanna explained. "But like I said, there are people from all over here. Not just from other planets. Fandom is like a dimensional nexus...thingy."

Hanna's description of things wasn't quite like the translator's. "My name's Hanna, by the way. I'm here to help you get adjusted and stuff. Or at least to answer questions."

"That is... good. Thank you," Liara said weakly. "I... didn't intend to be here..."

"Oh," Hanna said, suddenly much more sympathetic. "So you're here by accident? Where were you before you were here?"

"At an archaeological dig near my home planet, Thessia," Liara said, touching her own forehead. She was going to need a lie down when this was over. "I must have wandered into an entrance to your Fandom by mistake."

"Well, I can tell you that Fandom is very friendly. Mostly. The gremlins are a little grumpy," Hanna explained. And bitey, but she kept that to herself for now. "It's not the worst place to end up lost in, but...maybe we can find someone who can help you get back?"

She couldn't promise that, though.

"That... would be helpful," Liara said.

Though, oh Goddess, her mother would never let her out of the house again. "So this is a settlement of some sort?" she tried.

Yes, Liara. You could tell by the houses.

"Kind of? There are businesses, the school, and some homes," Hanna told her. "This place also has some oddities. Like how it's raining popsicles right now."

Liara looked up. "That isn't a natural phenomenon on this planet?" she guessed. "And what is the school for?"

"No, this is a Fandom specialty," Hanna said, chuckling a bit. "Though it is common for rain of water, snow, and sometimes ice to occur."

She glanced over at the school. "It's mostly for learning and to keep some people out of trouble, though the classes offered are a little strange. But they're fun."

This from a girl who wasn't all that into school.

"Okay," Liara said. She was developing something of a stress headache. "I... you knew my name. Did you... know I was coming?"

"I don't know if the island was expecting you, but it seems to know you arrived...somehow," Hanna said, unsure how else to explain it.
