Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"I'm actually pretty anonymous here," Zayne said. "Most of the people from our galaxy are from thousands of years in the future, where I guess I'm a really obscure trivia question at best."

"I assume you're from my era, at least. Is the Mandalorian War still going on?"

"No," Atton said. Okay, this was interesting. "We're done with that. Take it it's not the same when you're from."

"I'm still neck deep in it. The Jedi just recently started joining Revan in larger numbers," Zayne said, hopefully giving Atton a reasonable timeframe. "But do me a favor and don't tell me what happens, okay? I've had to go through enough predictions of the future to know that they don't happen the way you expect, no matter how sure of them you are."

"Oh, trust me, I've got better things to do than brief wayward ex-Jedi on whatever the future holds," Atton said. "Force-sensitives are annoying enough with all that 'I can see the future' junk as it is."

Damn, that felt like a long time ago.

"You're really not a fan of the Jedi, are you?" Zayne asked. It was an understatement.

He didn't seem to be a Mando, either. For one thing, he hadn't tried punching or recruiting Zayne. Those were usually easy signs.

"I had friends on Serroco," Atton said.

He figured that would tell the guy enough.

"I was at Serroco," Zayne said, understanding immediately. "I even tried to warn Saul Karath what was coming, but it wasn't enough and it was too late."
suitably_heroic: (lsp: oh you know)

Atton was having a private moment of dark mirth at the thought of Zayne's face if he mentioned what would become of Karath, the sadistic bastard. But he knew a chance to stay anonymous when he saw one, so he was going to stick with Zayne's request.

Image was fun, though.

"Well, thanks for sticking your neck out," he said; his bearing became a little less hostile as he said it. "Too bad the Jedi couldn't be bothered to do the same."

Zayne knew as well as anyone - especially after dealing with Dorjander Kace - that the Jedi situation heading into Serroco was much more complicated than Atton could know, but he couldn't really sum that up in a persuasive way. And anyway, he couldn't blame Atton for feeling that way after the loss of his friends. After all, Zayne essentially spent months lashing out at the Jedi who were responsible for the deaths of his friends.

Which was a TL;DR way of saying that yes, he was finding common ground in his own head with the really angry Jedi-hater. Damn hippie.

"I'm just sorry I couldn't do more," Zayne said. "I try to focus on the people who survived Serroco. I was fortunate that my friends did, even if they didn't listen to me and get off the planet when I told them to."

Seriously, only one person took his warnings to heart that day. And that was why Zayne would always think the world of Carth Onasi.

"It was a real mess," Atton said. So maybe he didn't quite have the exact back story with Serroco he was letting on here-- but that didn't mean he didn't have history with the place. "I don't think anyone had a damned clue what they were doing down there."

"There wasn't even time for people on the planet to react," Zayne said. "And almost nobody could believe that Cassus Fett would just bomb the planet with nuclear warheads. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who would do something like that, even in war."

Said the guy who used to be friendly with Malak until a girl got in the way and was sympathetic to Revan's cause. There would be some surprises in his future.

Yeah. Funny how at that exact same time, Atton's thoughts were heading down the line of Zayne, kid, you have absolutely no clue what's coming for you.

He was almost starting to see why Jedi enjoyed lording their cryptic knowledge of the future over other people that much.

Almost being the key word.

"The Mandalorians are involved," Atton said. "They were always brutal, going to do whatever it took. But maybe I'm just getting jaded." Yes. Yes, you were, Atton.

"I've spent some time with the Mandalorians. They're not all like that," Zayne said. "But Fett's really different. That guy thinks of genocide as a good opening gambit. I had to see him bomb Jebble, too, before I really understood what he was capable of."

"I've seen a lot of places fall to the Mandalorians," Atton replied. "Might be some good guys among the ranks, but it doesn't really matter in the end."
