Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

"It worked all right for me the first time, even if many of my students chose to be silent," Ender said, the look on his face warring between wry and serious. "I don't know whether I frighten them off, or they're simply not interested in speaking."

"Probably a little bit of column A, a little bit of column B," Valentine mused with a faint little smile. "Maybe some of column C, too, which is that they don't have anything to say, but I find that difficult to think of for anyone who goes to this school."

Ender shrugged. "It doesn't really matter, I suppose," he said, "The critical thinkers will find some way to ply their craft with or without my help." He tilted his head. "Have you finished your syllabus yet?"

Valentine waved her hand in the air a little. "More or less," she said. "I had most of the ideas planned out from the beginning, but I was doing a little bit of organizing at the shop and found some notes from a previous creative writing teacher that had some pretty good ideas. I mean, the notes were stained with sake, so right away, I knew they'd make for some interesting lesson plans."

Ender snorted. "I have some idea who's notes they must be," he said. "He was a decent teacher - interesting, certainly - but he had some idiosyncrasies. Not that that stands for much around here."

"Well, I know Apu wasn't much of a fan," Valentine noted. "I asked. And I think you'd be hardpressed to find someone who didn't have some idiosyncrasies...I'm pretty sure it's a required part of the application form."

"True enough."

Ender gave it a moment's pause, then segued, "I'm heading back to Naboo in about an hour. I don't suppose you might be interested in joining me?"

Valentine considered, checking her watch. "Just an hour? How long ago did you drop off here?"

"Two hours ago," Ender said. The corners of his mouth tugged up. "I just dropped by to speak to my teaching buddy. Since that's done with, I didn't see any reason to stick around when we were planning to extend our vacation into tomorrow."

"Hmmmm," Valentine contemplated. "And the likelihood of pushing back your Portal about half an hour more for cupcakes?" There was a hopeful little convincing lift at the end of the last word, because every return to a planet a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away should be prefaced with cupcakes.

Ender blinked, then chuckled. "I think Ben would murder me if I passed up on the chance to have cupcakes," he said, "And I'd be disappointed in myself for passing up on the chance to have cupcakes with my sister."

Valentine nodded. "Then we have ourselves a deal, Ender Wiggin. I'll meet you there in an hour, and then the sky's the limit, bother of mine."

"We should probably take some cupcakes with us," Ender mused. He smiled at her. "It's a deal."

"I think Ben would murder us both if we didn't," Valentine said with a laugh.

"Oh, I think between the two of us, we can take him," Ender said.

"That's true," Valentine nodded gravely. "You hold him down, and I'll tickle him."

Oddly enough, it was the same strategy she would use against Ender if she was siding with Ben.

"He is pretty ticklish," Ender said. "Go for the knees."

"Ha," said Valentine, because she was a dork, "weak in the knees."

Ender laughed. "If you want to put it that way, then yes."

"Well," said Valentine, "let me leave you to whatever you need to do, and then cupcakes, and then Naboo."

"I'm looking forward to it," Ender said honestly. "I'll move on and go check on my teaching buddy again, and then I'll see you." Beat. "Have fun, Val."

Valentine's grin back was a little crooked and wry. "You, too, Ender."
