Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Well.

It was raining popsicles and suntan lotion today. Because Fandom liked to make the newbies cry sometimes. Yes, the island had a sense of humor about these things.

We've all learned to accept that and move on with our lives. Well, all of us except for Britta. But she's the worst.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Kotetsu was already looking disgruntled about this. Already. On top of being pretty much told by the company that he was being transferred for a few months to some place where he'd be less likely to cause as much property damage, he'd been told by Ben that he could think of it as a promotion if he wanted to. A promotion? To teacher? Look, Ben, Kotetsu wasn't always the brightest crayon in the box, but you better believe he remembered the old adage about those who couldn't do, and what they ought to be making of those skills they had instead.

And to top it off, there was a smear of sunscreen across the top of his hat. He'd been worried for a moment that it was bird crap, until he'd realized that it was falling everywhere and had ducked under a tree for shelter. It would be easy enough to wash out later, but for the time being... Sunscreen. Hat. Teaching. Come on.

[Going to be gone for a chunk of the afternoon, but I'll be back to grab pings in the evening!]

Zoe felt kind of bad for all the new folks who had to deal with falling popsicles and such on their very first day. So, she was trying to look especially friendly as she kept an eye out for the poor teacher she had to buddy up with. At least she could try to explain that it wasn't like this all the time?

When she thought she spotted Kotetsu, she smiled and made her way over, ducking under the tree as well. "Hi there. Are you one of our new teachers?"

"That's what it looks like, isn't it?" Kotetsu at least managed to go from zero to smiling in about two seconds flat, so that was something! "The boss back home let me know that he was sending me off on some kind of transfer assignment. And let me know on the way in that I'd be co-teaching some class about heroes and villains."

If nothing else, he knew the material. He shrugged, and then offered Zoe a handshake. A kind of slick one, considering the sunblock.

"Kotetsu Kaburagi. It's a pleasure, Ma'am."

"It's a pleasure to meet you as well. I apologize for the weather we're having. It's not like this all the time, I assure you," Zoe said. "Yesterday was hot and...it smelled a bit strange, so this is actually better, believe it or not."

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I'm used to bad smells," Kotetsu replied with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I've spent years in the big city, and Sternbild has a way of working up all kinds of interesting stenches."

The stench of villainy!

... Which was really only a line he'd use aloud if he was in costume, so he was going to just make a mental note to save that one for later.

"Well, this place might be a change from a big city. The island is kind of small, and everyone gets to know everyone else quickly. I'm Zoe Winchester, by the way," she said realizing she'd forgotten that in the last ping. "I'm the principal here, so if you run into any trouble with your class, I can try to help."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yeah? Ben must think I need all the help I can get, if I lucked out enough to have the principal assigned to me."

Or perhaps he really needed someone to keep a very thorough eye on him, to be certain that he didn't accidentally break... the island.

"Maybe you can help me with something now, though. I was pretty much set here without having housing arrangements dealt with yet. I don't suppose you'd know where I new guy in town can settle down for a few months?"

"There's two different apartment complexes, and the hotel," Zoe said. "Some people in town also own homes, and might have rooms to rent. They'd probably have something up at the community center. I suppose it depends on how you feel about living with strangers."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"It's been a few years since I've lived with anyone at all," Kotetsu admitted, looking thoughtful at that, if momentarily a bit more sober than before. "I can probably take out a room in the hotel until something better comes along."

And TopMag would probably cover the bill as a working expense, seeing as it was still cheaper than the estimate Ben had gotten on the number that Wild Tiger had done on that cinema a few days back...

"Anything about these kids I should know, now that that's figured out?"

"Well...they're a great group, really. They've come from all over the place, some from different times...they're about as strange as sunscreen rain," Zoe said. "But they'll do whatever you need them to do in class. Just don't expect them to be weak, or inexperienced. Some of them have seen a lot of crap in a small amount of time."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Kotetsu took a moment to let all of that sink in, and then he nodded a little.

"I guess that makes sense, in a school that has a place for a class on heroism in the first place," he reasoned. "Not everybody that goes through the Hero Academy back home has had the easiest life, either."

Hell, it was rough enough when you were a kid and you awakened with powers you didn't understand. If there were kids here who had a place in a class for heroes (and villains), he didn't doubt for an instant that they'd had a good go of it already.

"Many of them find things easier here, with people who understand them. If you try to understand them, it'll go a long way to getting them to like you," Zoe advised. Plus, it would keep the students happy, and that kept her happy too.

"I have a daughter of my own," Kotetsu replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "I know my way around kids, Ms. Winchester, don't worry."

... Someday, he'd realize how flawed that statement really was.

Prof Tomoe smirked at the grumpy man hiding underneath a tree. Was that a beard shaped like tiny cats? What a ridiculous look.

He sidled up next to the man, still enjoying his popsicle. "Not enjoying the weather today?" he asked cheerfully.

Oh, you just wish that your beard was shaped like tiny cats, headlight-face.

"I have to say, it's been a long time since I've been attacked by suntan lotion," Kotetsu replied, arms crossed over his chest as he did his best to look casual about it. "Hey, do you even know where that popsicle has been?"

He'd already had three. His tongue was still slightly purple. Ssh.

[identity profile] daimonhost.livejournal.com 2012-06-30 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Does it even matter?" Prof Tomoe said, gesturing wildly with his sticky, half-eaten popsicle. "The very fact that we're encountering weather patterns composed of viscus liquids and frozen treats is a sign of remarkable manipulation of natural elements. Imagine if one could somehow harness that ability for a constructive end goal..."

And maybe figure out a way to attack some annoying teenage girls with superpowers with it? Note to self: look into engineering a deadly monster made entirely out of frozen sugar water.

See Kotetsu. See Kotetsu stand there and blink while he digests that.

...

"Right!" That was totally what he was thinking, too! Honest! "Like not getting sunburn!"

It was BRILLIANT.

[Gaah, sorry. Someone ran into a power pole or something outside and knocked out the power down my street for an hour or so, there.]

Prof Tomoe hadn't even considered any plans that didn't involve horrible genetic abominations in some some shape or other.

"Oh yes. I suppose that works as well." He offered a hand, not caring that he was still holding a sticky cherry popsicle. "Professor Souichi Tomoe. I'm teaching here this summer."

[It's fine. Slow play for the win?]

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

"Kotetsu T. Kaburagi," Kotetsu replied, leaning forward and inspecting Tomoe's hand, partly because he was trying to figure out the best angle of attack for a handshake, and partly because he needed a second to blink, while the man's family name played a quick round of Punch Kotetsu in the guts with his emotions. He was smiling again by the time he'd looked up and managed to find a handshake configuration that would leave his hand only a little sticky. "Also teaching here, that Heroes and Villains 101 workshop?"

He figured he could probably just get away with teaching a heroes workshop. Who wanted to learn about villainy, anyhow?

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] daimonhost.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps luckily for Kotetsu, Prof Tomoe looked less like a lovely, sadly deceased superhero fangirl and more like a slightly deranged shadowy figure. He missed any sign that Kotetsu's smile might have faltered for a moment.

Prof Tomoe arched an eyebrow over the top of his shiny glasses. "Are you certain about that? I'm here to teach a workshop entitled Heroes and Villains 101. I don't think the course will be bothering with the first half of the title, however. Heroism is greatly overrated. I will never understand why they think that tiny miniskirts are suitable attire for combat."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Because Pepsi is paying good money for her to wear that miniskirt," Kotetsu replied, before his brain caught up with the rest. "And it's right here on my schedule, teaching it on a Tuesday."

He flicked his finger against an entry in his day planner after a moment of flipping through, and then held it up for Tomoe to see.

"And we will definitely be putting emphasis on the Heroing part, if I have any say in the matter!"

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] daimonhost.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And the other eyebrow arched up. "Pepsi? What does that have to do with anything? You'd think we'd have fewer public alien attacks if there was corporate money involved." There was no reason to make these things big and public when you likely had a better shot at letting your own alien invasion achieve its goals by going under the radar.

Prof Tomoe pulled a paper schedule out of a pocket in his lab coat, with a course scheduled for the same time and place on Tuesdays, and showed it to Kotetsu to see.

"It appears we're co-teaching a class together. Well, this will be ... interesting."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"No kidding..."

Kotetsu was trying not to wrinkle his nose at the matching schedule. Trying so, so hard. He was teaching a class about heroes and villains with a guy who... well... he seemed kind of villan-ey from where Kotetsu was standing.

"So, what, do we take turns or something?"

Because there was no way he was going to agree with this guy on pretty much anything. A class on villainy? Bah!

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] daimonhost.livejournal.com 2012-07-01 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Prof Tomoe? Kind of villain-ey? Whatever would give someone that accurate impression?

"I suppose so, unless you wanted to take it up with the school authority. As loathe as I am to encourage people to go into heroics, I suppose compromise is likely our only option."

Re: Meet Your Teachers (Summer 2012)

[identity profile] 100powered.livejournal.com 2012-07-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Cooperating with someone who disapproved of heroes. It left a bitter taste in Kotetsu's mouth, but he supposed all he really needed to do was make being a good guy seem more appealing to the younger generation than some guy in a lab coat would make villainy look.

That shouldn't be too hard, right?

"Okay! Then we compromise," he replied. "There are... seven sessions in the summer? That gives us one for either introductions or a final, and then three shots at making the students see things our way each. Sound fair?"
