Kicking Ass, Teamwork Style [Wednesday, Period 3, Week 5]

Kennedy looked as sleepy today as she had yesterday; apparently it was a busy week at her other job. Not that this was stopping her from pacing back and forth in front of the class today, a cup of coffee in one hand. The Danger Shop setup was pretty simple: just an open patch of grass scattered with trees and the occasional boulder, but most importantly several identical hourglass-shaped sand pits. Each pit was about 20 feet long and strewn haphazardly with rocks, toys, the occasional bright orange traffic cone-- various obstacles of different shapes and sizes, enough to guarantee that there was no straight-shot path from one end to the other.

"Simple one today, everybody," Kennedy told them. "Teams of four or five like last time. Your job is to get your entire team from this side of the sand to the other side, one at a time."

See? Simple.

"Couple of catches, though." Oh. Well, okay then. "Person crossing at the time is gonna be blindfolded--" Kennedy gestured to a nearby table laid out with enough blindfolds for everyone-- "and the rest of you have to guide 'em from one side to the other. Without actual hands-on guiding, got that?"

She paused for just long enough to let them process that (and to have several gulps of coffee), then went on. "Oh, yeah. Step on or bump into any of the things in the sand and you're frozen until a teammate bails you out. Which is to say, you're stuck there until one of your teammates finds the 'unfreeze ray' and tags you with it." In other words, the Nerf disc shooter that was hidden somewhere around each team's miniature obstacle course. But she'd let them try and figure that out. "Okay, enough from me. Get to it, yeah?"

On that note, she assigned people to groups and then took a step back to observe and maybe see if anyone came up with a particularly clever solution.

"I'll go first if somebody'll tie this on for me," Ace offered, dangling a red bandanna from one hand.

She braided her own hair into that headache-just-to-look-at-it french thing; it wasn't like she couldn't tie a blindfold. She just didn't trust herself to do it properly so she couldn't see.

"I'll do it for you," Shira said, reaching out to take the bandana from Ace.

Victor looked across the sand, annoyed again that there was a lack of metal for him to work with.

"I can get some of the toys out of the way from here magnetically," he said, then fiddled with the collar of his shirt before he spoke. "Or ... this place is a giant computer, program, right?"

He wasn't really asking; when he tried, he could sense it pulsing around him. He was only surprised it had taken him this long to think about it.

And, once again, Sholeh felt embarrassed she had nothing concrete to offer. "I can, ummm, follow directions?"

*Is there any way we can help?* Zhahar asked, sounding anxious.

=Even if we're close to the surface, we wouldn't be able to see anything through Sholeh's blindfold.= Zeela's disappointment was almost palpable. =And even if one of us came into view, that blindfold would still be there.=

*Hmmm...* Zhahar said. *Maybe I can come up with something with a little more thought.*

::You do that,:: Sholeh said. ::I'm gonna sit here and feel useless until you do.::

Surreal looked at her group-mates, at the sand, and back at the group.

"Do we care if we do this right, or just if we do it first?"

"If first is what we're after," Victor said, "I could block the simulation's programming until we're by the unfreeze ray and then turn it back on. But it's completely a cheat, and that's not really a team way of doing it."

He ... actually did care about those last two details.

"I can walk on-air to the other side, then hold a bridge for the next person to follow me," Surreal replied, eying the distance. "The problem is, that, blindfolded, I will not be able to see where I am going. You would all need to call out directions to keep me from walking in circles."

"Someone would have to verbally direct each person that followed me, since I would need to concentrate to keep the air under them firm."

"And I could probably just jump all the way across, but I think that misses the point," Squall pointed out. " It's not that hard a task. It would probably be more interesting for all of us, and more fun, and require more teamwork, if we just do it the way we're supposed to."

[identity profile] harpy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-06-06 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Surreal just rolled her eyes at him. "That is why I asked," she pointed out. "I do not know what does or does not count as 'teamwork' since I tend to live and work alone."

"Besides, different voices shouting conflicting directions could be hilarious."

[identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com 2012-06-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Squall shrugged. "Then we plan out a route ahead of time, so the differing directions clarify instead of conflict."

Cassie didn't actually panic when the topic of blindfolds was brought up, but it was something she really didn't want to do.

Bobby was here and, having listened to radio, was shooting Kennedy some oddly pensive looks. For a guy with a secret identity, he really wasn't all that great with subtle.

He was, of course, around (if a bit distracted) if anyone needed his help with something.
