Kicking Ass, Teamwork-Style, etc. (Wednesday, Period 3/Week 4)

Kennedy had left emails and written notes for all the students instructing them to meet in the Danger Shop per usual-- and that they should prepare to get soaked and better not wear anything that couldn't handle water.

Why would be evident as soon as they arrived and found themselves on the pebbled bank of a broad river; a number of rafts, big enough to hold about two people each, lay on the riverbank not too far away. There were some poles on the riverbank too, but not enough for all the rafts; you could say the same for thir coils of rope. Life vests, on the other hand, were plentiful in case anyone needed one. Given the way the river was fairly calm in some spots but eddied and swirled pretty heavily in others, particularly near the clusters of rocks that broke the water's surface here and there, the vests might be a good idea, eyesearingly orange as they were.

"You know that whole saying about how there's no 'I' in team?" asked Kennedy, who was standing ankle deep in the water with her hands in her pockets. "Kind of cliche, I know, but that's gonna be your big rule to live by today. If you're gonna get things done as a group, you need to be on the same page. Maybe you're not gonna agree all the time? Hell, maybe under normal circumstances you actually can't stand each other. In which case you might just have to suck it up and deal until you get out of trouble."

Not that she'd know from experience or anything. Ahem.

"Case in point: getting from this side of the river to that side. Groups of six-- that's including Bobby and Squall here-- and two to a raft. Either your whole group makes it across, or you have to start over... and watch out for the fish. They don't bite, but they are kinda aggressive with the leaping." She waved a hand toward the rafts. "Good luck."

The whole thing seemed straightforward to Victor, though he was a little nervous about the possibility of smashing on a rock. He buckled on his life jacket and waited for his team.

Kate was a half-decent swimmer, but even she was strapping on a disturbingly orange life vest while she eyed the rafts. "Anyone else wondering what constitutes 'aggressive' leaping?" Because she couldn't quite picture it.

"It might mean that they jump into the raft," Sia said, though she didn't sound overly worried as she strapped on her vest. "I didn't hear anything about no powers, did anyone else?"

"I did not," Sholeh said, eying the brightly-colored vests dubiously. Everyone else seemed to be wearing them, which meant that she should, though she didn't know what they were meant to be for. Easy to spot if you went over, perhaps?

"Maybe we can tie our rafts together with ropes?" she suggested. "That should stop us from getting separated."

Re: River Crossing Group 1

"Okay," Victor said. "But what do we do if one raft tips over or gets stuck? Are we ready to all go down together?"

Re: River Crossing Group 1

[identity profile] 3girls-1core.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I was thinking that we'd leave space between them," Sholeh said, voice small. "A few feet of rope between them will let us remain together without putting any of the other rafts in imminent danger if something happens to one. Also, it ensures that we’re all close enough to help."

Cassie had never been on a raft before, so this was still something she wasn't sure about.

Ace was trying to decide between taking her jacket off so as not to soak the billions of badges, and...not doing that. "This might make a better life jacket than those things."

Not that she could say much about the lifejackets' colour, since the lining of her own was almost exactly the same retina-threatening orange.

"I'd say we shouldn't worry about getting wet, but I have a feeling we're going to fall in at least once," Billy admitted.

Thomasina eyed the rafts, ropes, and poles, her fingers itching for some paper, or a drawing slate -- something with which to rough out some potential designs.

Given the lack of poles, each raft rowing across on its own was out of the question, but the rope was giving her ideas. "Does anyone have experience traversing rivers?" she asked. "I wonder if there's some way to string a rope across the river and use it to guide the second and third rafts."

Assuming the rope was long enough, which she questioned, but it was an idea.

"I could fly across with a rope," Angelica said, eyeing the rafts as well. "But I don't know if we're supposed to use our powers to do this."

Either way, maybe she could arrange for Topher to fall in.

Right. Powers. Something else to factor in.

"Nothing was said against them," Thomasina pointed out. "And I believe that part of working as a team is the benefit of everyone's varied skills. How are you with knots?"

Getting the rope across was useless if Angelica couldn't secure it properly. Or, for that matter, if no one could secure it on this end.

Re: River Crossing Group 3

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I'm okay with them," Angelica said after thinking that over for a moment. "I was in Girl Scouts for awhile, but I've never been boating or anything."

Re: River Crossing Group 3

[identity profile] godscrankshaft.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"If we have a few strong arms," Thomasina explained, "we shan't need much boating experience. Merely a strong grip. Tie the rope across the river and use it to cross, hand-over-hand."

She grinned at Angelica. "At least, I believe it will work."

Re: River Crossing Group 3

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"You better put a life vest on then," Angelica said, helpfully offering Surreal one before taking one herself. "Hopefully nobody will fall in but just in case!"

Shira frowned thoughtfully, wondering if there was some way she could use Craft to help the rafts across -- and if that constituted cheating. But hey, nothing had been said against it, so there was an option.

She was probably looking a little too thoughtful there.

Bobby and water (even Danger Room/Shop water, which somehow worked the same as real water as far as his powers were concerned) were pretty good friends, as it happened, though even if he was prone to using his powers openly (which he wasn't), he didn't know if they'd be of any help in this situation.
