Is Love a Tender Thing? (Tuesday)

"So, say you've managed to exchange meaningful glances with the object of your affections," Dojima chirpped as the students took seats. "So, it's time for the next step - actually saying something to them."

"That's right, the fine art of making small talk while flirting. You don't want to jump right into your life story and scare them off."

"Or, more like," Romeo said, as he slid off the desk, "bore them to tears. Everyone has some long, sad story, and those are fit best for whispering late at night. At first meeting, your goal is to amuse."

"Things that will not amuse," Dojima agreed, starting to tick things off on her fingers. "Weather. Booooooooring. Unless it's raining Drop Bears. Cafeteria food, unless it's actually sentient that day. Allergies, unless you're allergic to chocolate, because that's never NOT funny."

"How much you love your parents," Romeo added. "Or how much you hate them. What you did at the gym that morning, unless you saw the other person there. You want to be light, charming.
Someone the other person will want to talk to more -- or possibly drag off into a stairwell somewhere, if you're fortunate."

Yes, this was their idea of wooing and romance, people. There had been an incident at Caritas in the bathroom for Dojima's birthday one year, after all....

"Pay attention to their non-verbal cues," she suggested. "If something isn't taking, don't be afraid to change tactics, or excuse yourself politely and retreat for a better opportunity."

"And if you can't come up with anything to say but they seem receptive, don't be afraid to touch," Romeo said. "A gentle look and a hand on the arm can say more than five million poems."

Rapunzel frowned, unsure why getting dragged into a stairwell was a goal. Maybe there was something fun in the stairwell? That made sense, she supposed. She made a mental note to explore the stairwells a bit more thoroughly and returned her attention to the lecture.

Frank smiled around the room, looking for a partner.

Small-talk. He could totally do small-talk.

Partners! Rapunzel liked activities that involved partners. Because that meant getting to talk to people!

Yay!

"Hey," Frank said with a smile. "Want to pair up?"

"That sounds fun!" Rapunzel declared, her expression suggesting that her words were something of an understatement.

"Great," Frank said, with... less enthusiasm than that, but only because he doubted that it was possible to have more enthusiasm than that. "So... you like baseball?"

It seemed like as good a starting point as any.

Rapunzel pursed her lips. "I've seen it on TV," she answered. Then giggled. "But I don't really understand it? I mean, those guys who talk about it on TV seem to expect you to know what's going on."

Re: Activity!

[identity profile] catchmeifyoucan.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, it's the best," Frank assured her. "And easy when you get the hang of how it works." Oh, wait, what was that about watching for cues, though? "But what kinds of things are you interested in?" he segued.

Smooth. He could totally be smooth.

Re: Activity!

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-05-29 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Rapunzel certainly didn't think otherwise!

It was possible that she wasn't the best to ask about people being smooth, though.

"Um. I guess I like painting. And baking. And, um, long walks on the beach." Some day someone was going to have to tell her that that one was a terrible cliche. "And most things where I get to talk to people." She really liked people!

"What about you?"

Frank grinned. He liked most things, really. "Um... TV back from when I'm from," he said immediately, because wow with the yes. "Baseball, obviously. Music. Um... nice clothes?"

Dork.

"Nice clothes, huh?" Rapunzel smiled at that. "I don't really know that much about... fashion and things? I mean, I can sew, but there are all these styles that I don't know!" So she tended to stick with the familiar.

Sholeh looked around for a partner, trusting her sisters to help guide her.

=Try not to go off babbling about books right off the bat,= Zeela advised.

*Unless he also sounds excited about it,* Zhahar added. *But if he does...*

*=BE CAREFUL!=*

Sholeh was going to try not to wince with both her sisters giving her an earful like that.

Lucrezia hoped she wouldn't be too disappointing a substitute for a charming young man. But she, too, was in search of a partner for this exercise, ad thus she pulled her chair closer to the other girl's.

"Sholeh, is it not?" she asked. "I don't believe we progressed to small talk at the picnic."

Sholeh would actually feel much more comfortable talking to Lucrezia than any charming young man of her acquaintance, actually.

"It is!" she said, beaming at the idea that Lucrezia had remembered her name. "And you're Lucrezia. We'd only gotten to hellos at the picnic. Now would be an excellent opportunity to remedy this, no?"

Re: Activity!

"It would seem expressly made for that opportunity," Lucrezia laughed. "Are you settling in well, then, my love? This island can be a touch confusing. One hopes you have a big sibling who can assist with the more complicated matters."

"It's still quite confusing," Sholeh admitted. Turning into a pony the other weekend hadn't helped matters. "Simon was quite nice. He didn't really have a chance to explain much about the island, though. To busy explaining that everything I grew up with was different here."

No landscapes. No Ephemera. Nothing.

"Then we have that in common," Lucrezia said. "For my life at home shares little resemblance with this world. Most of what I don't understand, I dismiss as magic. Perhaps that's childish of me, but I fear my mind would burst if I tried to comprehend all of the scientific leaps that the centuries have left behind."

Re: Activity!

[identity profile] 3girls-1core.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Does your world have magic, then?" Sholeh asked. "Ephemera has magic, but nothing like the magic I have seen since arriving here."

Re: Activity!

[identity profile] holy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not to my knowledge," Lucrezia admitted, "except in that the mystery of the Holy Father's love is a kind of magic that we mortals are not given to understand. But that is more philosophy, and it is not the way that many here speak of it or practice. What sort of magic does your Ephemera have, then?"

Re: Activity!

[identity profile] 3girls-1core.livejournal.com 2012-05-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Holy Father?" Sholeh asked. "I don't know what that is." The Tryad worshipped the Three-Eyed Mother, but never in anything that Sholeh had ever read had mentioned anything about a father. "Ephemera has many demon races," she admitted, "though I don't know much about those at all."

Well, she didn't know anything about other demon races, anyway.

"And there are Shamans and luck-makers and people who are said to be able to speak right to the heart of Ephemera. Oh, and the Eater of Worlds, though It's been locked away for centuries beyond counting."

Shira could do conversation. Really, she could. She just didn't always like being social.

But for this, she could make a passable attempt at it. And so she looked around for a partner.

Romeo roamed about the room as the students paired up, willing to work with anyone who ended up shy of a partner.

Lucrezia was wondering how well 'thank you for assisting in maiming my husband' counted as small talk. Or 'sorry for poisoning you while we were married and both of us were insane.'

Small talk did not seem to be her forte, but it did not seem to impede her progress, either.
