Kicking Ass, Teamwork-Style, etc. (Wednesday, Period 3/Week 3)

The Danger Shop was set up to look like a park today... if the park had been designed by someone with a really strange sense of fun. For one, halfway between the playground-- which was where the students would find themselves upon arriving-- and the picnic area stood a small but twisty maze of shrubbery. Just past the maze was a very large (but shallow) patch of muddy ground, and on the far side of the picnic area stood a tall, smooth-barked tree. Anyone listening closely, or who happened to have enhanced hearing, might be able to pick up on faint but plaintive mewing from up in the branches.

"So what are you gonna do when you have a thing come up unexpectedly, and you have to solve it with a quickness?" Kennedy began conversationally. "No time for research or making plans, and maybe you're in over your head because this is something you've never had to deal with before? In a group, that is. By yourself is different. I mean, the thinking on your feet is the same, but there's a whole thing about communicating and being on the same page as other people that makes things tricky."

She turned around and waved a hand at the setup in front of them. "So here's your sitch. You have a big important party to get to in an hour. Real fancy, black tie, missing it is not an option, oh, and you're already dressed up and on your way there. Except there's one problem. That cat stuck in the tree? Supposed to be a present for the guest of honor. You're gonna need to get it out of there... and you need to go through all of this to do it. Could get messy if you're not careful. Good luck with that."

Inspired by something she'd had to do last week? Maybe, yeah.

She paused as if remembering something, then added, "And watch out for the random clay guys lurking in the maze. They're not very friendly."

"Why are we bringing a cat as a gift to a black tie party?" Victor asked no one in particular. "That seems ... I don't know. Inconsiderate."

He was trying to think his way through the situation, and kept getting roadblocked because, while he knew exactly what they would do at home, that wasn't here. Adjusting to a new team was harder than he would have expected, even if one of the faces was the same.

Perched on one of the postbars of a roundabout, Ace swung her feet and sighted toward the tree at the far end of the patch.

"Maybe it's some fancy pedigreed type and the guest collects 'em?"

"Right, but even if you were an insane cat collector, would you want a new one when you were all dressed up?"

Not the point of the simulation, Victor.

Ace grinned. "Might, if it matched my outfit. Could be tailored to only shed the same colour as the lady's dress..."

"It'd give you a Dallas Talents villain vibe if you carried it around all night," Victor mused, grinning back. "Maybe that would work at some parties."

"...Dallas Who?" Alas, poor ungroovy 1980's kid, for whom Dallas Talents was still submerged in a freezer somewhere.

Let us be thankful that Ace was English, or else Victor would have regarded that as a cue to break out a dreadful Dallas impersonation. But he couldn't do a bad accent in the face of someone with a real one, so:

"Movies," he explained. "It's ... like a James Bund parody. The first two are pretty funny. Anyhow, the villain's got this bald cat he carries around." He glanced to Ace. "You should see them."

"Along with everything else that's come out in the last twenty-five years." Though Ace frowned a bit at bald cat. "Did you know there's four Illinois Smith films now?"

"Yakko said so during class Monday," Victor remembered, and frowned again. "Professor Yakko? Mr. Warner? It sounds wrong no matter what."

"Professor Puppy-Head?" Ace suggested, grinning again.

"He'd probably take it as a compliment," Victor decided, and glanced back toward Kennedy. "... y'know, this lady is my most normal teacher? School is warped."

This was not precisely an insult.

Ace snorted. "What school isn't? I reckon it's a toss-up between her and my art teacher, though, for normal." Yeah, she'd just leave the therapy bit off the end, thanks. "Since the other one's this bloke who got frozen in World War Two."

"Either I know who that is, or there's more than one of them," Victor told her, and neither would surprise him. "And is the time travel girl calling somebody else weird for being frozen for a while?"

"Nah - they had cryogenics on Iceworld, where I was before here -- from what I heard it scrambled your brain something fierce, though." Ace nodded toward their current teacher. "But she seems like she's not much older than us; same with the art teacher."

Which was also weird, of course, but people her own age tended to fall more closely into Ace's definition of normal.

The problem with spending a year with teenage runaways with authority issues was that everybody older than 17 or so tended to kind of blur into seeming the same age, and that was especially true with authority figures. Victor hadn't really given Kennedy's actual age much thought, so he had to give her a second look.

"Huh, yeah," he acknowledged. "She's ... maybe 20, 22? I always think teachers should be way older."

Ace nodded. "At my old school, the youngish ones tended to get married and disappear fast, and we always got stuck with some old dragon who looked carved out of petrified wood."

Victor snorted. "Sounds like my algebra teacher. My old school was just ... you know. A city school. A lot bigger than this."

Ace nodded. "So's Greenford High. Something like a thousand kids? Maybe two. This place has what, a hundred?"

"More importantly, why did we let our present escape instead of keeping it locked up in a cat carrier?" Richie wondered. A little foresight and this problem wouldn't even exist!

"Which is another excellent point," Victor granted. "Maybe one of us felt bad for it and let it out?"

... "Who likes cats here?"

Because Kate quite honestly could take or leave them, and would rather not have to be the one chasing it up a tree. She'd hit clay guys that needed hitting instead, thank you.

Topher eyed the cat.

Then back to Kennedy.

Cat.

Kennedy.

Cat. Kennedy. Cat. Kennedy. And so on, until...

"Nope," he decided.

To recap: there is a hedge maze you have to get through, just past the playground starting point. Past that is a very very large (read: it would be a really long detour to swerve around) patch of muddy ground, with the occasional tree or picnic table standing in it. Past that is the tree with the cat in it, and it is not a tree with too many good, climbable branches capable of supporting teenagers.

And some of these guys (moddable) may pop up in the maze.

Yeah, this was... incredibly familiar. Shockingly enough. So Bobby was here, available if anyone needed to talk to him.

Squall eyed the cat in the tree, wondering if he was really supposed to care about it. The random clay guys in the maze? THOSE were interesting.

In her defense, that party (the actual one) had been a necessary networking thing involving possible useful contacts for Team Slayer. And it had been a run-in with a demon that spit acid mucus. The cat's a much better bargain, really.

Meant to put this up last night before bed. Blame overtime. This is all moddable, but let me know if you need clarifications, or this setup only makes sense to me, or whatnot...
